Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

Dawn arrived gray and damp over the Hudson Valley. While Clara remained asleep, Elena sat at the library desk, reviewing financial statements Julian had gathered. For months, Victoria had systematically restructured the Sterling Foundation, transferring governance clauses to an offshore shell company registered in Panama.
"Look here," Elena pointed to an annex document dated three days after her reported death. "Victoria invoked a surrogate guardian clause based on my presumed will. But my will was held by Marcus Thorne in Boston, not her firm."
Julian leaned over the desk, his brow furrowing as he studied the signatures. "Marcus Thorne retired abruptly last winter. Victoria introduced his replacement, a partner named Callahan."
"Callahan was her college roommate’s brother," Elena revealed. "They didn't just want me gone; they needed Clara declared legally incompetent so Victoria could assume lifetime control of the maternal trust."
Footsteps echoed outside the library. Victoria walked in, holding a leather briefcase, fully dressed for the city. She stopped when she saw Julian and Elena working side by side.
"Julian, the board is waiting for the quarterly call," Victoria said, ignoring Elena entirely. "The rumors about an intruder at the estate are already leaking to the press. We need to release a statement discrediting the trespasser."
Julian slowly closed the ledger. "The board meeting is postponed, Victoria."
"Postponed? Over a security breach?" Victoria stepped forward. "Julian, you are letting grief cloud your judgment. Look at the company’s stock. We cannot afford instability."

"The only instability in this house," Julian said with chilling calm, "is the sudden disappearance of my wife's original estate documents. Where is Marcus Thorne?"
Victoria’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second before her expression hardened. "I suggest you wait for the lab results before making accusations you cannot retract."
