Chapter 11 - Rebuilding the Foundations

Over the following weeks, the external world raged with headlines. The arrest of Victoria Vance and her confederates sent shockwaves through the financial sector, but inside the Sterling estate, the gates remained firmly shut. Julian delegated his executive authority to a trusted interim committee, clearing his calendar completely for the first time in his career.

Mornings transformed. Instead of silent room-service trays delivered by maids, Elena, Julian, and Clara prepared breakfast together in the estate’s cavernous kitchen. Flour dusted the marble countertops as Clara clumsily attempted to stir pancake batter with a wooden spoon.

"Julian, you're measuring the milk like it's a chemical compound," Elena teased, laughing as he used a laboratory-grade measuring cup.

"Precision ensures optimal texture," Julian replied, though a faint, self-deprecating smile touched his lips.

Clara watched them both, her eyes darting between her mother’s smile and her father’s awkward attempts at domesticity. She took a handful of flour and patted it onto Julian’s black apron.

Julian paused, looking down at the white handprint on his chest. Clara held her breath, uncertain of the reaction.

Julian slowly dipped his finger into the flour, reached over, and dabbed a white dot onto the tip of Clara’s nose. Clara burst into giggles, hiding her face against Elena’s apron.

The cold, museum-like quality of the Sterling home was beginning to thaw, replaced by the messy, beautiful reality of a living family.
