Chapter 14 - The Silver Sailboat

Spring returned to the Hudson Valley, washing away the cold grays of winter with vibrant greens and blooming dogwood blossoms. The Sterling Foundation was completely restructured, shifting its entire mission toward pediatric mental health and trauma recovery programs for underprivileged children.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Julian, Elena, and Clara drove out to the lake cottage in Maine—a modest timber home where Elena had spent her childhood, far away from the imposing grandeur of the estate.
Clara ran along the wooden dock, wearing canvas sneakers and denim overalls. In her hands, she held a small wooden toy boat with silver sails that Julian had spent three weekends carving by hand in the estate workshop.
"Is it ready, Daddy?" Clara called out, her voice loud, confident, and ringing with pure childhood energy.
"It’s ready, Captain," Julian answered, jogging down the dock with a coil of light twine so the boat wouldn't drift too far into the current.
Elena sat on a bench at the shore, sketching the two of them in a small leather notebook. The dark circles of exhaustion were gone from Julian’s face; the ghost-like silence had entirely vanished from Clara’s demeanor.
Julian kneeled at the edge of the dock, helping Clara set the tiny vessel into the clear water. The breeze caught the silver fabric of the sails, sending the boat gliding forward across the ripples.

Clara clapped her hands, jumping up and down. "Look, Mommy! It floats! It really floats!"
"It follows the wind, sweetheart!" Elena called back, her heart swelling with gratitude.
