Chapter 10 - The Confession of Julian Sterling

That evening, after Clara had fallen asleep listening to an entire fairy tale read aloud by Elena, Julian invited Elena into the conservatory. The room was warm, filled with the scent of damp earth and night-blooming jasmine.

"I failed both of you," Julian said plainly, standing by the dark glass. "When they told me your car had burned, I shut down. I thought if I treated life like a balance sheet, nothing could hurt me again. I left Clara to nannies, doctors, and Victoria because looking at her face reminded me of everything I had lost."

Elena sat on the stone bench, her hands folded in her lap. "Grief makes cowards of strong men, Julian. But Clara didn't need your strength. She needed your presence."

"I know that now," he replied, turning to face her. "Seeing you kneel on that floor, holding that spoon... you weren't thinking about the company, the money, or the danger. You only saw Clara."

"Because nothing else matters," Elena said. "The world outside this house can take our wealth, our titles, or our reputation, and we would still survive. But if we lose our connection to her heart, we have nothing."

Julian walked over, kneeling before her as she had kneeled before their child. He took her hands in his. "Teach me how to be her father again. Teach me how to be present."

"You don't need teaching, Julian," Elena whispered, looking into his eyes. "You just need to put away the armor and let yourself feel."
