Chapter 12 - Voices in the Garden

Clara’s recovery was not an overnight miracle; it came in gentle waves. Some afternoons, shadows of anxiety returned, causing her to retreat behind furniture whenever an unexpected phone rang or a vehicle approached the perimeter.
During one of these episodes, Clara hid beneath the sprawling branches of a weeping willow near the pond. Elena did not try to pull her out. Instead, she sat on the grass outside the willow’s curtain of leaves, humming quietly.
After a few minutes, Julian joined them. He had removed his suit jacket, wearing only a plain shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Without a word, he crawled beneath the low branches and sat cross-legged on the dirt beside Clara.
"It’s cozy in here," Julian said quietly, looking at the moss-covered roots. "Like a green fortress."
Clara looked at him, clutching her brown bear. "The bad people won't come back, right?"
Julian turned his head, meeting her gaze with absolute earnestness. "No, Clara. Never. I made a mistake before by not watching closely enough. But now, Mommy and I are here. Nothing gets through that gate that could ever hurt you."
Clara leaned her head against Julian’s arm. "You stayed home today."
