Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL IN BOSTON

Six months later, the United States District Court in Boston convened for the final sentencing phase of Richard Sterling and Arthur Cole.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with over two hundred dockworkers, financial analysts, and civic leaders.

Richard sat at the defense table dressed in a coarse, oversized orange federal corrections jumpsuit, his hands and feet secured in heavy transport chains. The slick hair, tailored suits, and arrogant pride were completely erased; his face was sunken, pale, and broken by months in federal detention.

Mark Sterling took the witness stand.

Dressed in an elegant charcoal suit, Mark delivered his testimony with absolute, sovereign grace. He presented the complete forensic banking ledgers, the bid-rigging transcripts, and the audio files confirming Richard’s calculated conspiracy to defraud the dockworkers' pension funds.

The jury deliberated for a mere twenty minutes.

Chief Judge Arthur Vance (no relation) brought his heavy wooden gavel down with an explosive crack: BAM.

The sentences fell like iron portcullises:

Richard Sterling: CONVICTED of Federal Wire Fraud, Grand Larceny, and RICO Racketeering. Sentenced to TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS at the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, without the possibility of parole.

Arthur Cole: CONVICTED of Conspiracy and Money Laundering. Sentenced to FOURTEEN YEARS at FCI Danbury.

Total asset forfeiture of twenty-four million dollars seized from their private accounts and transferred directly to the Lily Vance Foundation.

Richard collapsed onto the table, sobbing hysterically as court marshals dragged him through the heavy iron holding door into permanent obscurity.

Mark and Brooke stood together in the gallery, holding hands with Diane, watching justice prevail with quiet, untouchable peace.
