Chapter 12 - THE VOWS ON THE BLUFFS

On a radiant Saturday afternoon in late September, the coastal gardens of Cliffhaven were transformed into an open-air sanctuary of white hydrangeas, blooming dogwoods, and soft acoustic classical melodies.

Over one hundred and fifty true friends gathered: dockworkers from Mark’s shipping lines, pediatric nurses from the foundation clinic, Captain Marcus Vance, Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins, and honest neighbors who had embraced the family through the storm.

Bathed in the warm golden light of the late afternoon sun, Mark stood waiting at an arch woven from driftwood and white calla lilies, looking striking in an elegant black naval morning suit.

Captain Marcus Vance stood proudly as Mark’s best man, his chest adorned with his service medals.

The string quartet began the gentle chords of Pachelbel’s Canon in D.

Brooke walked down the flagstone pathway in an exquisite, simple ivory silk gown with a flowing lace train, holding a bouquet of fresh white peonies and wild lavender. She looked breathtakingly beautiful, radiant, and untouchable.

Walking proudly beside her as the flower girl was three-year-old Lily, dressed in a miniature white tulle dress, scattering rose petals across the grass with a beaming smile.

Standing at the side table was Diane Sterling, smiling proudly beside a magnificent, three-tiered homemade lemon-lavender cake—with a special, small sugar flower placed right in the center for Lily to pluck whenever she wanted.

When Brooke reached the altar, Mark took her hands into his, his hazel eyes glistening with tears of profound gratitude.

The minister spoke the sacred vows:

"Do you, Mark, take Brooke to be your lawful wife, to cherish, honor, and protect her in truth, joy, and peace?"

"I do," Mark answered, his voice ringing clear, steady, and resolute across the bay.

"And do you, Brooke, take Mark to be your lawful husband, to walk with him as an equal and build an unbreakable home of love and honor?"

"I do," Brooke smiled, slipping a simple gold band onto his finger.

When the minister pronounced them husband and wife, Mark leaned down and kissed his bride under a gentle shower of falling white rose petals.

The entire gathering rose in a thunderous standing ovation, their cheers echoing across the harbor into the clear twilight sky.
