Chapter 10 - THE FOUNDATION IN THE HARBOR

Following the trial, Brooke Vance Sterling formally assumed her role as the Chief Executive Director of The Lily Vance Foundation for Marine Education & Child Welfare.
Under Brooke’s leadership, the foundation constructed a thirty-million-dollar state-of-the-art oceanographic discovery campus and pediatric nutrition center on a sun-drenched coastal parcel overlooking Boston Harbor.
The campus featured interactive touch-tanks, modern laboratory classrooms, and community dining halls where the children of working longshoremen could receive hot, chef-prepared organic meals and free tutoring completely free of charge.
On opening day, hundreds of commercial fishermen, pediatric nurses, and community leaders gathered on the sunlit lawn for the dedication ceremony.
Brooke stood at the wooden podium, dressed in an elegant ivory silk dress, looking breathtakingly radiant, confident, and sovereign. Beside her stood Mark, holding two-year-old Lily on his shoulders. Lily wore a pretty yellow sundress, happily waving a small wooden sailboat at the cheering crowd.
"True prosperity is not measured by the cost of the banquets we host behind guarded doors," Brooke addressed the crowd, her clear voice carrying across the harbor like crystal. "True prosperity is measured by how freely we share our table, how fiercely we defend the innocent, and how joyfully we welcome a child’s laughter into our lives. In this house, every child has a seat, and no one will ever be turned away."

The entire pavilion rose in a thunderous five-minute standing ovation.
Two-year-old Lily reached down, holding a pair of ceremonial gold shears alongside her aunt and uncle, and happily snipped the royal-blue ribbon as dozens of white doves were released into the cloudless morning sky.
