Chapter 5 - THE WHISPER AT TABLE NINE

Yet, beneath the glittering chandeliers and the laughter, the shadows of the Sterling family were not as innocent as a toddler's frosting raid.

While the dance floor filled with couples laughing over Lily’s critique, forty-eight-year-old Richard Sterling—Diane’s estranged brother-in-law and the senior trustee of the Sterling Family Maritime Foundation—sat at Table 9 with a face carved from bitter slate.

Richard had spent twelve months maneuvering to seize executive control of the family's deepwater harbor berths in Boston. To Richard, Brooke was an unwelcome interloper: a middle-class marine biologist whose family didn't belong in the society pages.

"She laughs at a ruined centerpiece because she has no respect for generational wealth," Richard hissed to his lawyer, Arthur Cole, keeping his voice beneath the swell of the brass instruments. "The girl treats sixteen thousand dollars like pocket change. We use this. Tomorrow morning, we file the petition claiming Mark's marriage represents reckless fiduciary incompetence."

Arthur Cole tapped his leather briefcase. "The trustee covenants require sound commercial stewardship. If we prove Mark's new wife encourages financial sabotage of family assets, the board will vote to freeze his sixty-million-dollar maritime trust."

Richard smirked, watching Brooke spin across the floor in Mark’s arms.

What Richard didn't know was that forty feet away, sitting quietly beside Lily’s grandmother, was Captain Marcus Vance—Brooke’s uncle and the legendary retired Commander of the Coast Guard Special Enforcement Division.

Marcus had not missed the venomous glare at Table 9.

He didn't need a microphone to read Richard's lips. Marcus had tracked cartel vessels across the North Atlantic for thirty years, and he recognized the unmistakable posture of a vulture preparing to strike.
