Chapter 5 - THE SECRET IN THE SERVANT RECORDS
The archive room smelled like old paper and dust.
Enzo stood in silence as investigators searched through the damaged shelves.
Someone had broken in.
But strangely...
They only took specific documents.
Not money.
Not jewelry.
Not valuable items.
Only information.
Adeline walked slowly through the room.
Her eyes stopped on a cabinet.
“My grandmother used to talk about this.”
Enzo looked at her.
“What?”
“She said your father kept records of everyone who worked here.”
“Why?”
“To protect them.”
That surprised him.
His father had always been different.
Less interested in power.
More interested in people.
Adeline opened the cabinet.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Employees.
Dates.
Notes.
Complaints.
Enzo picked up one folder.
His name was written on it.
He opened it.
And froze.
Inside was a report from twelve years ago.
A report about the night his father died.
His hands tightened around the paper.
“What does it say?”
He didn’t answer.
Adeline stepped closer.
Then she saw it.
A handwritten note at the bottom.
If anything happens to me, do not trust Victoria.
The room went completely silent.
Enzo read the sentence again.
And again.
Because those words came from the one person he trusted most.
His father.
Suddenly his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“You found the file.”
Enzo’s jaw tightened.
“Who are you?”
A laugh.
“You should be asking who helped your father.”
Enzo looked at Adeline.
The voice continued:
“Because the person who betrayed him…”
A pause.
“…is standing closer to you than you think.”
The call ended.
