Chapter 29 - The Twilight Over Lake Michigan

As the afternoon hours waned, the autumn sun began its descent toward the western horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, burnt orange, and deep indigo.
I stood by the reinforced glass windows of the private study, watching the city lights begin to flicker on across the sprawling grid of Chicago. The distant towers of the Loop shimmered like a constellation of fallen stars against the darkening backdrop of Lake Michigan.
Adrian walked up behind me silently, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. We stood together in the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of each other's breathing.
"Remember when we first stood here?" Adrian asked quietly, his voice low and resonant against my neck. "When the threat of Victor Vance hung over our heads like a guillotine blade, and every shadow felt like an ambush?"
"I remember," I answered softly, placing my hands over his arms. "We didn't know if we'd survive the week."
"And look at us now," Adrian murmured, turning me slowly within his embrace so I was facing him completely. "The syndicates are dismantled, the federal investigations are closed, our family is safe, and our empire is absolute. We have the rest of our lives."
May you like
"No more wars to fight?" I tested gently, a small smile playing at the corners of my lips.
"No more wars," Adrian confirmed, his green eyes burning with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "Only us."
