Chapter 26 - The First Light of a New Era
The crisp air of mid-October brought a vibrant, energetic clarity to Chicago, painting the early morning sky in shades of pale amber and brilliant sapphire. Inside the master suite of Goethe House, the floor-to-ceiling glass doors stood slightly ajar, allowing the cool, invigorating breeze of Lake Michigan to sweep through the room.
I stood by the edge of the private stone balcony, holding a porcelain cup of dark roast coffee while watching the sun climb higher above the glittering skyline of the Loop. Below, the city was waking up, its millions of residents returning to their daily routines, completely unaware of the absolute sovereignty quietly operating from the limestone ramparts of our estate.
My old life on Taylor Street felt like a distant memory, a chapter written by someone else in another lifetime. The cramped apartment, the endless stack of past-due notices, and the crushing anxiety of survival had been permanently replaced by an empire built on precision, loyalty, and unyielding power.
The heavy oak door of the suite clicked open softly, and Adrian stepped onto the balcony. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his white shirt open at the collar, looking every bit the dominant titan of the North Side. He slipped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder as he inhaled the rich scent of coffee and autumn air.
"You're up early, Chief Auditor," Adrian murmured, his voice rich and resonant against my neck.
"I was just reviewing the final quarterly audit for our European logistics trust," I replied, leaning back against his chest with a soft smile. "Everything is balanced down to the final decimal point. Not a single discrepancy remains."
