Chapter 16 - The Midnight Audit

By midnight, the estate had grown completely silent, wrapped in the protective embrace of the Chicago night.
Inside the private study on the top floor of Goethe House, the fire in the modern stone hearth crackled softly, casting a warm, amber glow across the towering mahogany bookshelves and the massive leather desk.
I sat at the desk, my laptop open, reviewing the final encrypted asset transfers from the Swiss accounts. Every dollar had been accounted for, every tax liability cleared through legitimate corporate structures, and every threat neutralized.
The heavy oak door opened silently, and Adrian stepped into the room. He wore a dark silk robe over his trousers, carrying two cups of chamomile tea. He set one down beside my keyboard before pulling a leather armchair directly beside mine, sitting down so his shoulder pressed against mine.
"Still auditing?" Adrian teased softly, nodding toward the glowing screen.
"Never stop auditing," I replied without looking up, though a small smile touched my lips. "It's how I keep you honest, Mr. Cross."
Adrian chuckled, reaching over to close the laptop lid gently with his fingertips. He took my hands, pulling me out of my desk chair and settling me comfortably across his lap in the armchair, wrapping his arms securely around my waist.
"The books are closed for the night, Chief Auditor," Adrian murmured, his breath warm against my neck.
I rested my head against his shoulder, breathing in the familiar, grounding scent of him. The city of Chicago stretched out beyond the reinforced glass windows—a sprawling, chaotic metropolis of millions of souls, ruled from the shadows by a man who had found his match in an auditor from Taylor Street.

"What do we do tomorrow?" I whispered, closing my eyes.
"Whatever we want," Adrian answered simply, his voice steady, resolute, and absolute. "We rule what we conquered, we protect what we love, and we own the night."
