Chapter 22 - The Skyline at Dusk

As the afternoon hours waned, the autumn sun began its descent behind the western skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant streaks of violet, bruised indigo, and blazing crimson.
I stood by the reinforced glass windows of the private office, watching the city lights begin to flicker on across the sprawling grid of Chicago.
Adrian walked up behind me silently, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. We stood together in the quiet sanctuary of Goethe House, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of each other's breathing.
"Remember when we first stood here?" Adrian asked quietly, his voice low and resonant against my neck. "When the threat of Victor Vance was hanging over our heads, and every shadow felt like an ambush?"
"I remember," I answered softly, placing my hands over his. "We didn't know if we'd survive the week."
"And look at us now," Adrian murmured, turning me slowly within his embrace so I was facing him completely. "The syndicates are gone. The federal investigations are closed. The empire is secure. And we have the rest of our lives."
