Chapter 20 - The Audit of the Underworld

The transition from survival to absolute control had not softened our vigilance; it had merely sharpened it. Where fear once dictated our every move, cold, calculated precision now reigned.

Later that morning, Marcus stepped into the office, carrying a heavy encrypted drive containing the final forensic audit of Victor Vance’s dismantled network. He placed it gently on my desk, offering a respectful nod.

"The last of Vance's dormant shell companies in the Caymans has been dissolved and absorbed into our holding trust," Marcus reported, his voice steady. "The local precinct captains have all reaffirmed their alignment with our operational terms. There isn't a ripple of dissent left on the North Side."

I looked up from my monitor, spinning the drive slightly between my fingers. "And the municipal permits for the Lake Shore development?"

"Approved by the zoning board before breakfast," Marcus grinned. "They didn't even ask questions. Your reputation precedes you, Chief Auditor."

Adrian, leaning against the nearby bookshelf with his arms crossed, watched the exchange with an expression of profound pride. "The city respects power, Marcus, but it fears precision. And Mara possesses both in abundance."

Marcus chuckled, excused himself, and left us to the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse.

I turned my chair to face Adrian, a playful spark in my eyes. "Is that your way of complimenting my administrative style, Mr. Cross?"

"It's my way of acknowledging that I am the luckiest man in Illinois," Adrian murmured, walking over and resting his hands lightly on my shoulders, his thumbs tracing soothing circles against my neck.
