Chapter 19 - The Morning Briefing at Goethe House

The early morning mist still clung to the surface of Lake Michigan as Monday began in earnest across the city of Chicago. Down on the streets, commuters rushed through the crisp autumn air toward the financial district, entirely unaware of the silent, absolute dominion maintained from the limestone ramparts of Goethe House.

Inside the private penthouse conference room, the scent of dark-roast espresso mingled with the crisp paper of global market reports. I sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, my tablet open before me as I systematically reviewed the overnight ledger updates from our European shipping hubs and domestic holdings.

The heavy oak door swung open with a smooth, silent glide, and Adrian walked in. He looked every bit the master of the North Side in his charcoal bespoke suit, his posture straight, his green eyes sharp and commanding. But as his gaze landed on me across the table, the cold corporate armor completely dissolved, replaced by a warm, private look meant exclusively for his chief auditor.

"Good morning, Mara," Adrian announced smoothly, taking his seat beside mine at the head of the table. He didn't look at the reports; he simply reached across the polished wood, his fingers brushing lightly against my knuckles. "How are the numbers looking this morning?"

"Flawless," I replied, offering a confident, knowing smile as I slid the consolidated liquidity projections toward him. "Every account is reconciled, every asset is secured, and our operating margins are at an all-time high. Not a single discrepancy remains."

Adrian chuckled, picking up his espresso cup. "You make a multi-billion-dollar empire sound like a balanced checkbook. Though I suppose that's why no one else could ever sit in that chair."
