Chapter 28 - The Midday Sanctuary

The afternoon sun reached its peak, casting a warm, golden glow across the antique rugs and modern art installations inside the penthouse suite.
Instead of attending corporate luncheons or power meetings in downtown Chicago, Adrian and I enjoyed a quiet lunch served on the private terrace overlooking the courtyard gardens. The crisp autumn breeze rustled the changing leaves of the ancient maples below, creating a soothing, natural soundtrack to our midday respite.
"Owen called from the solarium a few minutes ago," Adrian remarked as he poured a glass of sparkling water. "He claims he's entirely bored with physical therapy and is threatening to convince Marcus to let him drive a vintage muscle car down Sheridan Road."
I couldn't help laughing, shaking my head in disbelief. "Tell him that if he even steps foot near a sports car before his medical clearance is officially signed off by the chief specialist, I will personally freeze his trust account and audit his video game purchases."
"A severe and effective punishment," Adrian grinned. "I'll relay the warning immediately. Though I suspect he respects your financial audits more than he respects my security guards."
"As he should," I replied smoothly. "Numbers don't negotiate."
Adrian’s expression softened instantly, the sharp, calculating edge of the syndicate leader melting away into a profound, intimate warmth. He reached across the table, taking my hand in his and turning my palm upward to press a lingering kiss against my wrist.

"I still marvel at how we ended up here," Adrian whispered softly. "Out of all the paths our lives could have taken, out of all the dark alleys and dangerous rooms in this city, we found each other."
"It wasn't chance, Adrian," I reminded him gently, squeezing his hand. "It was calculation. Every variable led us straight to this exact moment."
