Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Derek stood paralyzed, looking between the armed guards at the doors and the massive mob boss standing before him.

"Emily... please," Derek stammered, dropping his arrogant facade, tears of raw panic welling in his eyes. "We can talk about this! Think about our families! Your mother—"

"My mother died believing you were a good man, Derek," Emily said, stepping directly in front of him. "She died while you were hiding the medical bills and threatening to put me in an institution every time I questioned your spending."

Derek dropped to his knees on the marble floor, reaching for the hem of her dress.

"Emily, I made mistakes! I was under stress! I love you!"

Alexander’s boot slammed down onto Derek’s outstretched wrist with bone-jarring force.

Derek shrieked in agony, pulling his hand back against his chest as he rolled onto the floor.

"Don't touch my wife," Alexander whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, deadly fury.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a certified asset liquidation notice.

"At eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Alexander said, looking down at the groveling man, "every asset under the Sterling name—your firm, your condo, your cars, and your club memberships—will be seized to satisfy the three-million-dollar fraud judgment."

"You can't leave me with nothing!" Derek sobbed, clutching his bruised wrist.

"I’m not leaving you with nothing, Derek," Emily said, looking down at him with icy composure. "I'm leaving you with a ten-year federal prison sentence for bank fraud."

Two guards hauled Derek up by his armpits, dragging his limp, weeping frame toward the service elevator.

His pathetic cries faded into the distance as the steel doors cut him off from the world he had stolen.

The penthouse fell into a serene, unburdened quiet.

Alexander turned to Emily, his stern, terrifying expression softening into something profound and protective.

"Are you all right?" he asked softly.

Emily looked down at her left hand, where the massive diamond sparkled with brilliant fire, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had torn down her tormentor in less than an hour.

"I've never been safer in my entire life," she whispered.

Alexander took both her hands in his, bringing them gently to his lips, kissing the bruised knuckles with reverent, unbreakable devotion.

"This penthouse is your fortress, Emily. No one will ever make you feel small again."

He smiled, a rare, breathtaking warmth illuminating his face.

"Now come. Let's get you something to eat. You missed your anniversary dinner, and my private chef makes an extraordinary lemon tart."

May you like

Emily laughed—a light, musical sound that filled the grand room, echoing against the glass that overlooked the sparkling Chicago skyline.

She took his arm, stepping into the warmth of the dining room as a new dawn began to break over the lake.
