Chapter 3 - The Restraining Order

Alexander walked over to the console, tapping the live intercom.
"Report."
"Mr. Moretti, it's Rayburn," Luka's voice came through the speaker from the garage gate. "He brought two county deputies and a private writ of protective guardianship signed by Judge Callahan forty minutes ago. They're demanding to search the premises for a missing dependent."
Alexander's jaw tightened into stone.
"Show them the door."
"They're threatening an emergency federal search warrant for harboring a fugitive spouse, boss."
Emily stood frozen on the staircase, the color draining from her cheeks.
"Judge Callahan is Derek's second cousin," she choked out, clutching the banister. "They planned this. If I step foot out of this building, they'll lock me in a private facility in Wisconsin where no lawyer can reach me."
Alexander looked up at her, watching the sheer terror returning to her eyes.
He didn't hesitate.
He walked to the private study adjoining the living room, retrieved a thick blue velvet folder from the safe, and walked up the stairs to meet her.
"Emily," he said, stopping on the riser just below hers so their eyes were level.
"Yes?"
"How much do you want your freedom?"
"More than my life," she answered instantly.
Alexander opened the blue folder, revealing an expedited corporate marital contract pre-drafted under Cook County Special Chancery protocols.
"As long as you are Derek Sterling's legal wife, Illinois civil law gives him the standing to file medical guardianship petitions," Alexander explained, his voice low and intensely focused. "The only legal document that instantly voids a spouse's medical authority is an immediate, verified marriage under the High Commercial Asset Treaty."
Emily’s heart skipped a violent beat.
"You... you want to marry me?"
"I want to protect you," Alexander said, holding out a gold fountain pen. "Sign this, and by the time Rayburn takes the elevator up, you are the legal co-owner of the Moretti Holdings Trust. Touch a hair on your head, and it becomes an act of corporate treason against a ten-billion-dollar sovereign estate."
Emily looked down at the parchment, then looked into Alexander’s dark amber eyes.
She saw no mockery. No hidden traps.
Only the unwavering strength of a man willing to place his entire empire between her and the monster who had terrorized her for three years.
She took the pen.
Her hand didn't shake.
On the line marked SPOUSE, she wrote her name in clean, deliberate cursive:
Emily Rose Vance-Sterling.
Alexander took the pen from her fingers, signed his name beside hers with a single bold stroke, and pressed his signet ring into the hot red wax on the seal.

The elevator chimed loudly at the end of the private gallery.
The doors slid open to reveal Detective Rayburn, two armed deputies, and Derek Sterling holding his court petition like a banner of victory.
