Chapter 12 - The Black Chopper Twin high-intensity searchlights cut through the driving Michigan rain, pinning Julian Vance and his tow-truck drivers in a blinding column of white light.

A midnight-black AgustaWestland helicopter hovered fifty feet above the mud paddock, its rotor wash whipping the oak trees into a frenzy and sending Julian’s expensive umbrella tumbling across the fence line.

Julian stumbled backward, throwing his arm over his eyes against the blinding glare.

The helicopter touched down with a heavy skid onto the wet grass, the engines whining down as the side door slid open with a mechanical clatter.

Four private security operators in dark waterproof tactical gear jumped out, moving into a protective semi-circle around the farmhouse porch.

Alexander took my hand, helping me step down from the Maybach that had just slid to a halt at the gravel gate. The headlights of four trailing escort SUVs washed the entire driveway in brilliant amber light.

Julian stood drenched in the rain, clutching his ruined papers to his chest, backing away toward his Mercedes.

"You can't seize this land without a hearing, Moretti!" Julian screamed over the dying whine of the rotors. "I have the original debt registry! The paper is in my name!"

"The paper was in your name until six o'clock this evening," Alexander said, walking deliberately across the gravel, completely unbothered by the rain falling on his bespoke tuxedo.

Alexander stopped three feet from Julian, looking down at him with pure disdain.

"My trust attorney bought out the underlying banking franchise that issued your charter ten minutes after we left the ballroom," Alexander stated, each word landing like an iron hammer. "You don't own the debt, Julian. You are five million dollars in arrears to the Moretti Holding Group."

Julian’s face went dead white. He looked at me, his eyes wide with a desperate, animal terror.

"Emily... please," Julian croaked, his voice cracking just as Derek's had six months ago. "You don't know the whole story. I didn't take this land for the money."

TXT

"Then why did you take it?" I asked, stepping beside my husband.

Julian pointed a trembling, rain-soaked finger toward the old stone barn at the back of the property.

"Because your mother didn't bury documents under the floorboards," Julian whispered, his teeth chattering in the cold. "She left a locked iron safe containing the original partnership ledgers between Moretti's father... and the man who ordered the car crash that killed your parents."
