Chapter 1 - The Shadow Under The Walnut

Derek took a step forward into the office, his polished loafers squeaking on the hardwood border.

"With all due respect, Mr. Moretti," Derek said, his voice straining to sound reasonable and authoritative. "This is a private domestic matter between a husband and his wife. She has clinical anxiety. She hallucinates threats when she forgets her medication."

Beneath the walnut desk, Emily’s teeth chattered against her knuckles.

It was the exact script Derek had fed her sister, her friends, and the ER triage nurse who had examined her fractured wrist eighteen months ago.

Alexander Moretti didn't raise his voice.

He didn't reach for a weapon.

He simply buttoned the center button of his charcoal suit jacket, towering over Derek by nearly four inches, his broad shoulders cutting off the view of the hallway.

"You smell like cheap gin and vanity, Mr. Sterling," Alexander murmured, his tone as calm and lethal as a winter lake. "And I don't give two damns about your domestic arrangements."

"Then let her come out so we can leave," Derek snapped, his patience fraying. "Emily! Get out from behind that desk right now before you embarrass this family any further!"

Alexander tilted his head slightly.

"Luka," he said softly.

The guard by the wall moved so fast Derek didn't even have time to raise his hands.

Luka stepped into Derek's personal space, grabbed him by the lapels of his designer blazer, and shoved him back toward the corridor threshold with brutal, clinical efficiency.

"Hey!" Derek sputtered, stumbling against the doorframe. "You can't touch me! Do you know who my firm represents? We audit three of your logistics subsidiaries!"

Alexander walked toward the doorway, stopping three inches from Derek's pale, twitching face.

"Then tomorrow morning, you can find new clients," Alexander whispered. "Because as of five seconds ago, your firm has been terminated from every Moretti holding entity."

Derek’s eyes went wide with shock.

"You're ruining a seven-figure contract over an unhinged woman who ran out of a dinner party?!"

"I'm ruining your career because you raised your voice in my private suite," Alexander replied. "Luka, escort Mr. Sterling down the freight elevator. If his shoes touch this floor again, throw him into the river."

Luka grabbed Derek by the back of his neck, driving him down the hallway before he could utter another syllable.

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut, locking automatically with a dull pneumatic hiss.

The room fell into absolute, heavy silence.

Alexander walked back to his desk, stopped before the dark opening beneath the wood, and slowly knelt on one knee.

"He's gone," Alexander said, his deep voice unexpectedly gentle. "You can come out now."

Emily looked up from the shadows.

Alexander was thirty-four, with dark, swept-back hair, a sharp jaw shadowed by stubble, and eyes the color of dark amber.

He held out an open hand—large, warm, and scarred across the knuckles.

Emily hesitated, her fingers trembling, before placing her cold, bruised palm into his.

The moment their skin touched, Alexander’s gaze dropped to the purplish fingerprint bruises circling her wrist.

His amber eyes hardened into pure obsidian.

Before she could pull back, his desk phone chirped with a priority intercom alert from downstairs reception:

"Mr. Moretti, Detective Rayburn from the Cook County Special Investigations Unit is in the lobby with a squad car—he says he's answering a 911 domestic abduction call filed by Derek Sterling."
