Chapter 4 - The Ring On Her Finger

"Well, well, Moretti," Rayburn drawled, stepping into the penthouse foyer with his hand resting on his service weapon. "Looks like your luck finally ran out."

Derek stepped around the detective, his chest puffed out, a sneer of vicious triumph plastered across his face.

"Emily, pack your things," Derek barked, pointing toward the elevators. "Judge Callahan granted me full medical conservatorship. You are returning to our home tonight under lawful police escort."

Emily didn't cower.

She stood on the grand marble staircase beside Alexander, her shoulders back, her chin lifted high.

Alexander descended the stairs slowly, one hand in his trouser pocket, exuding the calm, terrifying presence of an apex predator on his own territory.

"Detective Rayburn," Alexander said smoothly. "You entered a private residential property without a signed search warrant."

"I don't need a search warrant to retrieve an abducted woman under an emergency conservatorship order, Moretti," Rayburn countered, waving the paper. "Step aside, or you'll be charged with obstruction of justice and harboring a vulnerable adult."

Alexander reached the bottom of the stairs, stopping three feet from Derek.

"She isn't an abducted woman, Rayburn," Alexander said softly. "And she certainly isn't Derek's dependent."

Alexander raised his left hand, snapping his fingers once.

Luka stepped out from the private elevator, carrying a gold-embossed leather registry portfolio.

He handed it directly to Detective Rayburn.

"Check page three, Detective," Alexander instructed.

Rayburn opened the portfolio, his arrogant smirk fading line by line as he read the certified chancery stamp.

"Illinois Emergency Registry of Deeds and Marriages," Rayburn read aloud, his voice wavering. "Executed at nine-forty tonight under the Interstate Sovereign Commerce Act."

Derek’s head snapped toward Rayburn.

"What are you talking about? What registry?!"

"She’s my wife, Derek," Alexander said, each word dropping like a lead weight onto the marble floor.

Emily stepped down the stairs, walking calmly to Alexander’s side.

Alexander reached out, took her hand, and slid a heavy, internally flawless eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring onto her left ring finger.

The stone caught the chandelier light, throwing brilliant, icy blue flashes across Derek’s stunned face.

"Under Illinois state statute 750, subsection 4," Emily said, her voice clear and completely devoid of fear, "any prior marital conservatorship is automatically dissolved upon the execution of a higher-tier commercial union."

Derek’s face drained of every drop of color.

"No... no, this is impossible! We aren't divorced! You can't marry him!"

"Your marriage to Emily was fraudulent from day one, Sterling," Alexander said coldly, tossing a fresh file onto the coffee table. "Because two years ago, you forged her signature to take out a three-million-dollar mortgage on her family's ancestral farm in Michigan."

Derek gasped, his hands flying to his collar.

"That constitutes grand felony fraud, voiding your marital union under the Clean Hands doctrine," Alexander added, his eyes narrowing into slits. "And your friend Judge Callahan was placed under federal administrative suspension thirty minutes ago by the Judicial Ethics Board."

Rayburn took two steps backward, dropping the court order onto the floor as if it had caught fire.

"Sterling, you lied to me," Rayburn hissed under his breath. "You said this was clean."

May you like

"Rayburn, wait! Don't leave me here!" Derek screamed as the detective turned on his heel and hurried back toward the elevators with his deputies.

The elevator doors closed, leaving Derek standing alone in the massive penthouse.
