Chapter 10 - The Broken Trust The Maybach tore through the empty streets along the expressway, heading north toward the Wisconsin border under a dark, rain-slicked sky.

Inside the cabin, the partitioned monitors glowed with financial records and corporate entity registries.

"Julian vanished nine years ago," I said, staring at the scanned corporate charter on the console. "When my father died, Uncle Julian told my mother that the logistics trust had collapsed under federal taxes. He told us there was nothing left except the Michigan acreage."

Alexander was silent, his fingers tapping a rhythmic cadence on the leather armrest. He was looking at an internal audit file dated October 2018.

"Julian didn't vanish," Alexander said quietly, not looking up from the screen. "My father forced him out of Chicago. My father discovered that Julian had embezzled fourteen million dollars from our maritime shipping accounts through dummy farm leases in Berrien County."

I looked at him, horror dawning over me in waves. "Our farm was the dummy lease?"

"Yes," Alexander said, finally meeting my gaze, his amber eyes shadowed with a heavy, unspoken burden. "My father settled the account quietly to avoid a public tax audit. He foreclosed on the debt, took the paper, and locked it in the Moretti family vault. He never enforced it because your mother was still alive."

"And when your father died two years ago..." I breathed.

"The vault was audited by our firm's secondary accounting pool," Alexander admitted, his voice tight with controlled fury. "The firm Derek worked for. Derek found the unfiled promissory note in our dead storage archives. He realized he could use it to choke your family into submission without me ever knowing the file had left the basement."

My phone chimed with a frantic FaceTime request.

The screen flashed: Clara.

I tapped accept.

The screen illuminated with flashing amber light bars and blinding rain. Clara was standing on the gravel driveway of our Michigan farmhouse in her mud boots, rain plastering her hair to her face.

Behind her, two heavy diesel tow trucks were winching the equine therapy trailers toward the road, while two men in tactical security uniforms stood blocking the barn door.

"Emily!" Clara sobbed into the camera. "They're chaining the stables! They have an armed court writ!"
