Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Guest

The peace they had aggressively fought for was absolute, but in their world, shadows always linger at the very edge of the light.

It was a cold, snowy evening in December when the unexpected, dangerous guest arrived at the Kane estate.

Willa and Everett were sitting by the massive stone fireplace in the main drawing room, enjoying a quiet, intimate dinner.

Marco knocked firmly on the heavy wooden doors, entering the room with a grim, intensely serious expression.

"Boss, we have a situation at the main gate," Marco reported, keeping his hand resting cautiously on his holstered weapon.

"What kind of situation?" Everett demanded, immediately slipping back into his cold, authoritative persona.

"It is Marcus Thorne, the head of the New York syndicate," Marco explained quickly.

"He arrived unannounced with heavily armed guards, demanding a private audience with you."

Everett frowned, exchanging a quick, concerned glance with Willa.

Marcus Thorne was a notoriously brutal, unpredictable man who controlled the entire East Coast underworld.

An unannounced visit from him was usually the immediate precursor to a massive, bloody war.

"Send him into the main library, and disarm his men at the door," Everett ordered calmly.

"I will meet him in five minutes."

Willa stood up, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

"Everett, is it safe?" she asked, grabbing his hand tightly.

"It will be fine, my love," Everett promised, kissing her knuckles reassuringly.

"Stay here with the guards until I am finished."

Everett walked into the dimly lit library, finding Marcus Thorne standing near the antique globe, holding a glass of expensive bourbon.

Marcus was an older, heavily scarred man with cold, dead eyes that had witnessed unspeakable violence.

"Everett, you are looking remarkably healthy for a man who was practically dead a year ago," Marcus greeted him with a sharp, mocking smile.

"What do you want, Marcus?" Everett asked bluntly, completely ignoring the false pleasantries.

"I heard that you are aggressively shutting down your illicit operations in Chicago," Marcus stated, taking a slow sip of his drink.

"You are leaving a massive vacuum in the Midwest, and I intend to fill it."

"I came here to tell you that the New York syndicate is taking over your old territory, and you are not going to interfere."

Everett crossed his arms, staring down the older, incredibly arrogant boss with a terrifying, blank expression.

"You are welcome to the scraps I left behind, Marcus," Everett replied smoothly.

"But if your men bring any drugs or violence into the neighborhoods where my wife operates her clinics, I will consider it an act of war."

Marcus laughed, a harsh, dismissive sound that echoed loudly in the quiet room.

"You have gone soft, Kane," Marcus sneered, stepping closer to Everett.

"You let a former homeless girl turn you into a pathetic, charitable coward."

"If she gets in my way, I will swat her aside like a nuisance."

The temperature in the library plummeted to absolute zero.

Everett did not yell, did not pull a weapon, and did not make a single threatening move.

He simply looked at Marcus with the dark, empty eyes of a true monster waking from a long, peaceful sleep.

"If you ever speak my wife's name again, Marcus," Everett whispered dangerously.

"I will burn New York to the ground, and I will personally mount your head on the gates of this estate."
