Chapter 11 - The Echoes of New York

The five years of pristine, unshakeable peace were the greatest blessing Everett Kane had ever known.
He had successfully buried the violent, blood-soaked history of his syndicate beneath a massive empire of legitimate corporate wealth.
Willa had expanded her charitable medical clinics across the entire Midwest, becoming a beloved, untouchable figure of hope in Chicago.
Their son, Leo, was thriving in the absolute safety of their heavily fortified, incredibly luxurious estate.
But in the dark, unforgiving world Everett used to rule, debts of humiliation were never truly forgiven.
It began on a freezing Tuesday morning in late November at the downtown flagship clinic.
Willa was walking through the busy pediatric ward, carrying a stack of medical charts and offering warm, reassuring smiles to the families.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the emergency entrance burst open, completely shattering the quiet, healing atmosphere.
A man stumbled into the lobby, wearing a torn, blood-stained overcoat, his face incredibly pale and covered in cold sweat.
Willa immediately dropped her charts, her brilliant nursing instincts taking over as she sprinted toward the collapsing man.
"Get a gurney, right now!" Willa shouted to her medical team, catching the massive man before his head could hit the polished tile floor.
As she laid him gently onto the ground, his coat fell open, revealing a terrifying, intricate tattoo of a black serpent on his chest.
Willa recognized that specific symbol immediately from the classified syndicate files Everett had shown her years ago.
It was the official, unquestionable mark of Marcus Thorne and the New York crime family.
The man was not bleeding from a gunshot wound; his veins were bulging, and a dark, unnatural foam was gathering at the corners of his mouth.
He had been poisoned with a highly sophisticated, synthetic neurotoxin designed to kill him slowly and painfully.
Willa frantically began checking his vitals, ordering her staff to prepare a broad-spectrum antidote, even though she knew it was likely too late.
The dying man suddenly reached up, grabbing Willa’s wrist with a terrifying, desperate strength.
"He never forgot," the man gasped, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated terror.
"Marcus Thorne sent me to deliver a message to the king of Chicago."
Willa’s heart stopped completely, the cold, suffocating dread violently crashing down upon her shoulders.
"The truce is over," the man whispered, his voice rattling in his throat as the poison finally reached his heart.
"The East Coast is coming to take the queen."
The man’s eyes rolled back, his body going completely limp on the pristine floor of the clinic lobby.

Willa knelt there in the absolute silence, realizing that the protective walls she had built around her family were about to be violently tested.
Marcus Thorne had waited five years in the shadows, and the nightmare was officially beginning all over again.
