Chapter 7 - The True Queen

The estate was completely purged of Sterling's corrupt influence by sunrise.

The loyal men had successfully reclaimed the Kane empire, neutralizing the rival street gangs who had tried to seize the legitimate shipping routes.

The violent storm had passed, leaving behind a cold, absolute, and heavily fortified peace.

Willa was sitting quietly in the grand library, sipping a hot cup of tea, trying to process the unbelievable, chaotic events of the night.

She was still wearing her cheap, secondhand wedding dress, stained with dust from the midnight escape.

The heavy library doors opened, and Everett walked into the room, looking tired but incredibly powerful.

He had washed the blood from his hands, but the terrifying aura of the mafia king still clung heavily to his broad shoulders.

He walked over to the leather sofa and sat down beside her, offering a warm, incredibly gentle smile.

"It is over, Willa," Everett promised softly, reaching out to gently touch her hand.

"Sterling and his allies have been permanently removed from the board."

"Your mother's medical bills have been paid in full, and she has been moved to the finest, most secure memory-care facility in the state."

Willa let out a massive, shuddering breath, overwhelmed by the profound relief of knowing her mother was finally safe.

"Thank you, Everett," Willa whispered, tears of gratitude welling in her eyes.

"But what happens to me now?"

"Our marriage was a fake arrangement designed to humiliate you."

"Do you want me to sign the annulment papers and leave?"

Everett frowned, his dark eyes flashing with a fierce, unexpected intensity.

He leaned forward, completely invading her personal space, his gaze locked entirely on her beautiful face.

"You are not going anywhere, Willa," Everett stated firmly, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register.

"You sat beside my bed when the rest of the world wanted me dead."

"You whispered a promise to a stranger, and you risked your own life to pull me out of the darkness."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, flipping it open to reveal a massive, flawless diamond ring.

"Sterling gave you a cheap gold band as a cruel joke," Everett said, taking the plain ring off her finger and replacing it with the stunning diamond.

"This is the ring my father gave to my mother, and it belongs to the true queen of this empire."

Willa stared at the incredibly expensive ring, completely shocked by the genuine, deep affection radiating from the dangerous man beside her.

"Everett, I am just a disgraced, homeless nurse," Willa protested weakly, feeling entirely unworthy of his massive wealth.

"You are a brilliant, courageous woman who was completely destroyed by corrupt, greedy men," Everett corrected her fiercely.

"I am going to spend the rest of my life proving to you that you are entirely safe with me."

"If you will have me, Willa, I want this marriage to be absolutely real."

Willa looked into his eyes, seeing past the terrifying mafia boss persona to the intensely loyal, vulnerable man underneath.

She realized that she had fallen in love with him in the quiet, dark hours of his coma.

"I will have you," Willa whispered softly, leaning in to close the distance between them.

Everett kissed her, a deep, passionate, and incredibly desperate kiss that tasted like victory, survival, and absolute devotion.

The fake, humiliating wedding had miraculously transformed into the most genuine, beautiful partnership the city had ever seen.
