Chapter 8 - The Raid

The brilliant red flare exploded beautifully and violently above the dark, icy shipyard.

Instantly, the deafening, rhythmic sound of heavy military helicopter rotors filled the freezing air.

Three massive FBI tactical helicopters descended rapidly from the low, churning storm clouds.

Blinding, aggressive searchlights pinned Victor and his terrified mercenaries like insects on a stark display board.

"Federal agents, drop your weapons immediately or we will open fire!" a booming, mechanical voice echoed over a loudspeaker.

Eleanor had not just secured temporary immunity from Victor with her cash payment.

She had meticulously orchestrated a massive federal sting operation to wipe out his entire syndicate in one fell swoop.

Victor panicked wildly and aggressively pointed his gun toward Eleanor in a fit of pure rage.

I surged upward from the ice with every single ounce of strength left in my battered body.

I tackled Victor violently to the frozen ground just as his weapon discharged with a deafening crack.

A searing, agonizing pain ripped through my left shoulder, burning like hot iron.

I completely ignored the bleeding bullet wound and punched Victor brutally in the jaw with a closed fist.

The ruthless mafia boss went completely limp beneath me, his eyes rolling back in his head.

Federal agents swarmed the pier from every direction, tackling the confused mercenaries and slapping them in heavy steel handcuffs.

I crawled painstakingly across the red-stained snow toward my terrified, beautiful wife.

Rosa was already kneeling securely beside Eleanor, frantically checking her for any stray injuries.

I collapsed weakly at Eleanor's feet, clutching my bleeding shoulder to slow the massive blood loss.

"You saved us," I whispered weakly, my vision beginning to swim with dark spots.

Eleanor looked down at me, her stern expression finally softening for the first time in a long week.

But before she could speak a word of comfort, a sharp gunshot rang out from the edge of the pier.

Celeste was standing up, holding a discarded mercenary assault rifle aimed directly at Eleanor's unprotected back.

"I am not going to a federal prison with absolutely nothing to show for it!" the desperate woman screamed in fury.
