Chapter 17 - The Judas Protocol

Mateo’s finger tightened relentlessly on the trigger, but before the heavy weapon could discharge, the entire estate was plunged into sudden, absolute darkness. The vibrant, pulsing music died instantly, replaced by the terrifying, deafening shriek of emergency sirens.

"Download complete!" Eleanor shouted triumphantly through the comms. "I just triggered the building’s fire suppression system. Move!"

Thick, blinding foam began pouring aggressively from the ceiling vents, turning the glass corridor into an impenetrable white fog. I dropped to the floor just as Mateo fired a blind, frantic burst of bullets into the space where I had been standing. Using the chaotic cover, I crawled rapidly back toward the server room, pulling a small, heavy flashlight from my tuxedo pocket.

I found Eleanor standing perfectly still in the dark, clutching the glowing USB drive like it was a sacred relic. I grabbed her hand tightly, dragging her down a hidden maintenance stairwell I had memorized from the estate blueprints. We bypassed the panicked, stampeding guests and emerged into the freezing, biting wind of the snowy courtyard, sprinting toward our extraction point in the dense treeline.

Alexander and Rosa were waiting in a running, armored SUV, their faces pale with anxiety. We piled into the vehicle, and Rosa slammed her foot on the accelerator, tearing aggressively down the winding, treacherous mountain road.

"Did you get it?" Alexander asked, his voice trembling with hope.

Eleanor held up the drive, her chest heaving as she gasped for air. "I completely drained their offshore network. Three billion dollars just vanished into thin air, permanently locked inside a secure federal server."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, pulling my wife into a desperate, crushing embrace. We had actually done it. We had crippled the most dangerous cartel in the world.

But as my encrypted phone buzzed violently in my pocket, a deep, sickening dread settled into my stomach. I answered the call, expecting the furious screams of a cartel boss. Instead, I heard the smooth, terrifyingly calm voice of Agent Miller—the exact FBI handler I had trusted with my immunity, my secrets, and my son's safety.

"You always were incredibly resourceful, Lucian," Miller sneered into the receiver. "But you completely forgot the golden rule of the underworld. Every single man has a price. The Valerius Cartel just paid me ten million dollars to ensure you never make it back to New York."

"If you even look at my son, I will tear your heart out of your chest," I roared, absolute, unadulterated panic seizing my throat.

Miller laughed a cold, hollow sound. "You are too late. I am standing inside your beautiful upstate nursery right now. Bring the USB drive back to me in exactly twelve hours, or you will have a very small, very tragic funeral to attend."
