Chapter 18 - The Siege of the Sanctuary

The flight back to New York was a suffocating, agonizing eternity. Eleanor sat completely paralyzed in her seat, her eyes wide with a mother’s unspeakable terror. Alexander looked entirely hollowed out, crushed by the realization that his past had directly endangered his innocent grandson. I spent the entire twelve hours meticulously checking and re-checking my heavy tactical gear, letting a cold, murderous rage completely consume my soul.

Agent Miller had heavily fortified our upstate estate, treating my own home like an impenetrable cartel stronghold. When our private jet landed at a small, abandoned airstrip near the property, a massive, unexpected spring blizzard had begun to fall, violently whipping snow across the dark landscape.

"He has at least two dozen corrupt federal agents patrolling the perimeter," I whispered, peering through high-powered thermal binoculars from the edge of the dense tree line. "They are heavily armed and expecting a frontal assault."

"Then we will give them an absolute ghost story instead," Rosa said coldly. She racked the slide of her military-grade sniper rifle, her weathered face locked in an expression of pure, lethal focus. "I trained the private security team you left behind. If Miller breached the house, my men are already dead. I am going to make these traitors pay in blood."

I turned to Eleanor, handing her the encrypted USB drive containing the cartel's billions. "You and your father stay in the armored vehicle. If I do not return in thirty minutes, you drive straight to the Canadian border and you never, ever look back."

"Bring our baby back to me, Lucian," Eleanor pleaded, gripping my tactical vest with desperate, trembling hands.

I kissed her deeply, a silent vow passing between us. Then, I vanished into the blinding snow.

Rosa provided devastating, flawless overwatch from the ridge. With terrifying precision, she systematically eliminated the corrupt perimeter guards, their bodies dropping silently into the deep snowdrifts. I moved like a shadow across my own lawn, utilizing the secret, hidden access panels I had personally installed when building the estate.

I breached the basement through the reinforced wine cellar, my suppressed pistol drawn and ready. The house was eerily, terrifyingly quiet. I crept silently up the grand staircase, stepping over the tragic bodies of my loyal, fallen security guards. My heart pounded relentlessly against my ribs as I approached the heavy wooden door of the nursery.

I kicked the door open violently, aiming my weapon directly into the center of the room. Agent Miller was standing by the pristine white crib, holding a heavy revolver pointed directly at the small, wrapped bundle inside.

"Drop the gun, Lucian!" Miller screamed, his arrogant composure finally cracking under the intense pressure. "Throw the drive on the floor right now!"

I slowly lowered my weapon, my eyes locked onto the terrified, traitorous agent. "You made a catastrophic mistake coming into my home, Miller. You absolutely forgot who I am."
