Chapter 1 - The Resignation

I stared in absolute silence at my visibly panicked chief financial officer.

"From what exactly did she resign?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

Arthur placed a thick, leather-bound portfolio onto the center of my expansive mahogany desk.

"From absolutely everything, Lucian."

He opened the heavy folder with trembling hands to reveal a massive stack of notarized legal documents.

"She resigned as the primary signatory of the legitimate arm of Moretti Holdings."

"She officially stepped down as the sole legal guarantor of our offshore banking accounts."

"She even removed her name and her forensic credentials from the charitable foundation."

I leaned back in my leather chair and let out a harsh, dismissive laugh.

"So let the woman throw a dramatic tantrum."

"We will simply replace her signature with mine on all the corporate paperwork by tomorrow morning."

Arthur looked at me with absolute, unadulterated terror widening his pale eyes.

"You truly do not understand the complex financial structure she built to protect you."

"The international banks only approved our forty-million-dollar credit line because her pristine forensic accounting license backed the collateral."

"Without her active, verified signature, the morality clause inside the contract triggers an automatic, irreversible freeze on all corporate assets."

My phone buzzed violently against the polished wood of my desk.

It was an urgent text message from the regional bank president.

Our massive credit facility had just been suspended pending a full federal review.

The blood drained completely from my face as the reality of my catastrophic mistake set in.

I immediately ordered my top enforcer to track Eleanor's encrypted burner phone.

An hour later, he walked slowly into my office holding a crushed, useless plastic device.

"We found this destroyed phone at the bottom of a Midtown dumpster, Boss."

He handed me a small, folded piece of thick stationary that was wrapped tightly around the shattered screen.

I unfolded the paper and instantly recognized my wife's elegant, precise handwriting.

"Check the safety deposit box you explicitly promised me you would never try to open."
