Chapter 13 - Blood on the Riviera

The heavy steel door of the subterranean vault groaned loudly as a massive explosive charge was planted on the other side. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, but my mind was utterly, terrifyingly calm. I had spent ten years as the undisputed don of the Moretti family, surviving countless assassination attempts and brutal turf wars. I had promised my wife I would never return to the shadows, but I would gladly burn the entire world to the ground to ensure she walked out of this room alive.
"Rosa, get them to the emergency extraction tunnel!" I barked over the deafening blare of the security alarms. I unholstered my heavy firearm, chambering a round with a satisfying, metallic click.
"I am absolutely not leaving you behind, Lucian!" Eleanor screamed, gripping my arm with surprising strength.
"You are going home to our son," I ordered fiercely, pressing a hard, desperate kiss to her forehead. "I will be right behind you. Run!"
Before she could argue further, the steel door blew inward with a catastrophic, deafening explosion. Thick, blinding smoke filled the tight corridor, followed instantly by the staccato roar of suppressed automatic weapons. I dove behind a massive bank of computer servers, returning fire with lethal, calculated precision. Two cartel mercenaries dressed in sleek, tactical black armor dropped heavily to the concrete floor before they even knew what hit them.
The cartel assassins were highly trained, but they were used to fighting terrified civilians and corrupt bankers, not a man who had built his empire in the blood-soaked streets of New York. I moved like a ghost through the server aisles, using the flickering neon lights to my absolute advantage. I systematically neutralized three more heavily armed men, but a sharp, burning pain grazed my ribs as a stray bullet tore through my tailored jacket.
Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of a heavy revolver echoed through the room. Rosa had ignored my direct order to flee. She stood bravely in the shattered doorway, firing with ruthless, terrifying accuracy, providing the exact cover fire I needed to fall back.

"The tunnel is open!" Rosa shouted, tossing an incendiary grenade blindly into the smoke-filled corridor to block the remaining reinforcements.
I sprinted toward the hidden escape hatch, grabbing Rosa by the tactical vest and dragging her down the dark, narrow chute just as the grenade detonated in a blinding flash of heat and fire. We slid down into the damp, echoing darkness of the old smuggling tunnels, the furious shouts of the cartel assassins fading rapidly behind us. We had survived the initial ambush, but the true war against the world's most dangerous syndicate had only just begun.
