Chapter 10 - The New Foundation
I woke up slowly in a bright, sterile hospital room filled with vibrant, colorful flowers.
The heavy, sweet scent of fresh gardenias immediately told me exactly who had decorated the space.
Eleanor was sitting quietly in a comfortable chair beside my bed, holding my hand with a gentle, reassuring grip.
"You have been completely asleep for three entire days," she said softly, offering a warm, beautiful smile.
I squeezed her hand weakly, profoundly grateful to whatever higher power existed just to see her face again.
She explained patiently that Victor and Celeste were both facing multiple decades in a maximum-security federal prison.
The FBI had officially agreed to grant me absolute, ironclad immunity in exchange for permanently turning over the criminal ledger.
I had lost my entire underworld syndicate, but I had successfully gained a priceless second chance at a real life.
Three months later, I officially transferred the remaining, completely legitimate side of Moretti Holdings entirely into Eleanor's highly capable name.
I permanently retired from the dangerous shadows to become a full-time, dedicated father and a truly devoted husband.
Our beautiful, perfectly healthy son was born on a warm, sunny spring morning in late May.
We moved to a quiet, highly secure estate in upstate New York, far away from the toxic, chaotic energy of the city.
Eleanor and I slowly and deliberately rebuilt our broken trust, finding a deeper, more honest love than we ever had before.
Our family was finally safe, completely whole, and permanently free from the mafia's dark, suffocating grip.
One quiet evening, Eleanor walked into our new kitchen holding a plain, unmarked white envelope.
Her hands were shaking violently as she placed the open letter onto the pristine marble counter.

It was a handwritten note from her father, a man we had publicly buried twelve years ago.
The letter simply stated that he was still alive, and he desperately needed her forensic skills to take down a massive, global cartel.
