Chapter 37 - The Eternal Skyline

The sun dipped low once again over the Hudson River, painting the sky in those familiar, breathtaking strokes of violet, copper, and gold. On the private balcony of the penthouse, high above the roaring pulse of Fifth Avenue, Tessa stood wrapped in her heavy wool shawl, watching the evening stars begin to emerge one by one in the deep indigo sky.
The balcony door slid open softly behind her, and a moment later, a warm, familiar weight settled over her shoulders as Rafe draped his heavy overcoat around her to keep out the chill of the spring wind. He stepped up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his solid, unyielding chest.
"You're quiet tonight," Rafe murmured, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
Tessa leaned back into his embrace, closing her eyes as she let out a long, peaceful sigh. She reached up, her fingers tracing the silver key that hung securely on the leather cord around her neck, right beside his heavy signet ring.
"I was just thinking about the road that brought us here," Tessa said softly. "From eleven dollars and seventy cents in a freezing restaurant kitchen... to this."
Rafe’s arms tightened around her waist, holding her as if he never intended to let go for the rest of eternity.
"We didn't just come far, Tessa," Rafe said, his voice rich with an immovable, absolute conviction. "We built this. Every brick, every step, every open door."
He turned her gently within his embrace so she was facing him. The fading amber light of the sunset caught his dark, piercing eyes—eyes that no longer held the cold shadows of the past, but only a fierce, boundless future.
"What are you thinking about for tomorrow?" he asked quietly, a faint, rare smile touching his lips.
Tessa looked up into his face, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her hand, and smiled back.
May you like
"Tomorrow," Tessa whispered, lifting her chin as the city lights began to blaze across the skyline like a million brilliant stars, "we break ground on the Brooklyn labs. And after that... we see where the road takes us."
Rafe leaned down, capturing her lips in a slow, deep, lingering kiss that tasted of absolute victory, endless strength, and a horizon that stretched out forever without a single shadow left in sight.
