Chapter 33 - The Weight of the Crown

The heavy oak doors of the private elevator slid shut behind Arthur Vance, leaving a dense, charged silence in the executive suite. Tessa stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the old man’s black town car merge into the chaotic stream of Fifth Avenue traffic below. The adrenaline of the confrontation was still humming in the air, a sharp reminder that the world they had conquered would never stop trying to reclaim them.

She unbuttoned her blazer, tossing it over the back of her chair, and walked over to the wet bar to pour two fingers of amber bourbon into a crystal glass. Without looking back, she held the second glass out behind her as Rafe approached, his heavy footsteps signaling his return from the door.

"You didn't have to threaten him quite so vividly," Tessa said softly, taking a slow sip of the spirit as she turned to face him. "Though I admit, watching his knees shake was mildly entertaining."

Rafe took the glass from her hand, his fingers grazing hers. He didn't smile; his dark eyes were still locked onto the heavy oak doors where Arthur had exited. "Men like Arthur Vance don't understand diplomacy, Tessa. They understand force. They spent decades treating this city like a chessboard where human lives were just pawns to be sacrificed for profit. Every time one of them breathes in our space, it’s a threat to everything we built."

"We won, Rafe," she reminded him, stepping closer and placing her hand against his chest, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his heart beneath his shirt. "He came here because he’s losing. The harbor contracts are shifting, the municipal board is backing our logistics reforms, and his monopoly is bleeding out in slow motion."

Rafe looked down at her, the hard lines of his face gradually softening as the familiar anchor of her presence pulled him back from the edge of his cold fury. He set his glass down on the table, wrapping both arms around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest.

"I know," he murmured, burying his face in the soft crook of her neck. "It’s just that when I look at you, I remember every single person who tried to crush you along the way. I spent years learning how to destroy my enemies so they could never touch the people I care about. Sometimes it’s hard to turn that instinct off."

Tessa leaned into his embrace, her fingers sliding up to stroke the dark hair at the nape of his neck. "You don't have to turn it off. Just remember you don't have to fight alone anymore. We share the crown, remember?"

He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, a rare, fierce smile touching the corners of his mouth. He reached up, his thumb tracing the silver key resting on her chest. "Crowns are heavy, Tessa. But with you? I wouldn't trade it for the world."
