Chapter 14 - THE CABIN BY THE LAKE

The timber-framed cabin sat perched on a granite bluff overlooking the glass-smooth expanse of Lake Saranac, surrounded by towering stands of pine and birch whose autumn leaves burned in brilliant hues of copper and gold.

As the dark sedan crunched to a halt on the gravel driveway, the silence of the North Woods enveloped the landscape, broken only by the distant call of a loon across the water and the gentle rustle of wind through the pines.

Nora, now nearly a year old and walking with clumsy, determined toddler steps, immediately squealed with delight as Rafe lifted her out of her car seat, swinging her up effortlessly onto his broad shoulder. She grabbed a handful of his dark hair with a gleeful shriek, showing zero fear of the man the rest of the city crossed the street to avoid.

Tessa stepped out of the passenger side, stretching her arms above her head as the crisp, pine-scented mountain air filled her lungs. The perpetual hum of Manhattan traffic, the frantic beeps of hospital monitors, and the heavy psychological weight of the syndicate wars felt a thousand miles away.

"If you let her pull my hair out by the roots, I'm docking your allowance," Rafe deadpanned, adjusting Nora on his shoulder while she babbled happily, pointing at a blue jay darting through the lower branches of an oak tree.

"She’s just testing your executive authority," Tessa laughed, walking around the car to pop the trunk and retrieve their weekend bags.

Before her fingers could even wrap around the handle of her duffel, Rafe’s large hand smoothly nudged hers aside. He effortlessly hoisted both bags with his free arm, leaving his primary hand free to hold hers as they walked up the timber steps toward the wide wraparound porch of the cabin.

The interior was magnificent yet rustic—a soaring vaulted ceiling of exposed pine beams, a massive stone fireplace dominating the center of the living room, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the uninterrupted panorama of the lake below. A fire was already laid out in the hearth, waiting for a single match to bring it to life.

"Mrs. Gable sent a cooler of homemade brioche and chicken soup," Rafe noted, setting the bags down near the entryway before setting a thoroughly exhausted, happy toddler down on the plush wool rug where a pile of soft blankets awaited her. "She threatened to have my security detail waterboard me if we didn't eat every single bite."

"Mrs. Gable is a national treasure and the only person in this state who keeps you properly managed," Tessa smiled, kicking off her boots and walking over to the massive stone fireplace. She knelt down, striking a match and touching it to the dry kindling until the flames caught, crackling happily against the dry birch logs.

The amber light flickered across the room, casting long, dancing shadows against the wooden walls.

As twilight settled over the lake, painting the sky in deep shades of indigo and violet, Nora finally drifted off to sleep, curled up in a makeshift nest of blankets on the sofa with her favorite stuffed rabbit clutched tightly in her small fist.

Rafe and Tessa sat out on the screened-in back porch wrapped in heavy wool blankets, two mugs of hot cider sitting on the wooden table between them, watching the stars emerge in the crystal-clear night sky far away from the light pollution of the city.

"You're quiet tonight," Rafe observed softly, his dark eyes turning away from the star-filled horizon to study her profile in the dim light.

Tessa rested her chin on her folded hands, looking out across the dark, reflective surface of the water. "I was just thinking about where we were six months ago."

"In a freezing restaurant kitchen, staring down an impossible deadline with eleven dollars and seventy cents," Rafe recited without hesitation, his voice low and steady.

"And now," Tessa continued, a quiet wonder in her tone. "We're here. No guards at the door, no federal indictments hanging over our heads, no enemies lurking in the shadows."

"Do you miss the chaos?" he asked, a subtle edge of curiosity in his tone.

Tessa turned her head, meeting his gaze directly. She reached across the small space between their chairs, sliding her hand into his rough, calloused palm.

"I don't miss the fear, Rafe," she said softly. "The chaos was just something we had to survive through. What I have now... what we built... that’s what I wanted."

Rafe’s grip tightened around her hand, his thumb stroking the back of her knuckles with an intensity that spoke volumes beyond words. He stood up from his chair, walking over to her side and holding out his hand.

"Come here," he commanded gently.

May you like

Tessa looked up at him, smiling, and placed her hand in his. He pulled her up, drawing her against his chest as the distant sound of the lake lapping against the shore filled the quiet night.

They stood together on the porch under the canopy of a million stars, wrapped in warmth, entirely safe, and completely home.
