Chapter 35 - Dawn on the Waterfront

The first pale streak of silver light cut across the East River, heralding the dawn of a brand-new day. Down at the Brooklyn waterfront, the massive timber beams of the old textile mill stood silent and majestic against the brightening sky, waiting for the wave of architects, engineers, and biotechnology pioneers who would soon arrive to transform the cavernous space into a temple of future medicine.
Inside the penthouse, the morning routine was a quiet, sacred ritual between two people who had conquered their own private hells. Tessa stood by the kitchen island, the steam rising from her ceramic mug curling into the crisp air, while Rafe leaned against the doorframe, watching her with an expression of quiet, profound contentment.
"The engineering team is scheduled to arrive at the site by nine," Rafe said, checking his watch before looking back up at her. "Dr. Vance wants to review the final equipment manifests for the trauma center’s second-floor surgical wing before noon."
Tessa turned around, leaning back against the marble counter, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Let them review. Everything is locked in, funded, and operating at peak efficiency. For the first time in our lives, Rafe, we’re actually ahead of schedule."
Rafe pushed off the doorframe, closing the distance between them in a few long, deliberate strides. He stopped inches away, his hands coming up to rest gently on her hips, his thumbs tracing the soft fabric of her sweater. "Being ahead of schedule just means we have more time to plan the next conquest."
She laughed softly, a bright, melodic sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of the night. She reached up, resting her hands on his shoulders, feeling the solid, unyielding strength beneath his shirt. "Don't you ever get tired of building empires, Rafe? Don't you ever just want to stop and rest?"
May you like
"I am resting," Rafe murmured, leaning down so his forehead rested against hers. "As long as I’m standing here with you, this is the only rest I’ll ever need."
The city outside was waking up now—the distant hum of traffic on the bridge, the deep blast of a cargo ship’s horn out in the harbor, the steady, rhythmic pulse of Manhattan roaring back to life. But inside the sanctuary of their shared world, time stood still.
