Chapter 13 - THE PEDIATRIC WING AT ST. CATHERINE'S

The morning sun streamed through the expansive glass windows of the newly renovated pediatric ward on the fourth floor of St. Catherine’s Hospital, washing the walls in warm, welcoming shades of pale blue and soft yellow. Gone were the flickering fluorescent lights and peeling linoleum of the old emergency wing; in their place stood state-of-the-art trauma bays, brightly painted recovery rooms, and a sprawling, sunlit playroom stocked with books, art supplies, and climbing structures.

At the center of it all stood Tessa, wearing her white lab coat over a simple navy dress, reviewing a digital patient chart on a tablet while chatting with a group of pediatric nurses.

"The new diagnostic imaging equipment arrived from Zurich this morning," Nurse Jenkins announced cheerfully, clutching a clipboard to her chest as she walked down the freshly waxed hallway. "And the biomedical engineering team says the calibration will be finished by noon. We can finally stop shipping our trauma cases across town for MRI scans."

"That's wonderful news, Sarah," Tessa smiled, tapping the screen of her tablet to log the update. "Make sure the night shift nurses get the updated operation manuals before handoff."

"Will do, Dr. Ward," Jenkins grinned, before leaning in slightly with a conspiratorial wink. "By the way... your favorite donor is currently holding court in the third-floor conference room with the hospital board. Rumor has it he’s threatening to buy the neighboring parking garage just to ensure you have a dedicated VIP parking space."

Tessa rolled her eyes with an affectionate smile. "Tell Mr. Calder that if he buys another piece of municipal real estate without consulting the hospital ethics committee, I'll personally revoke his visiting privileges."

"Oh, I wouldn't dare deliver that message myself," Jenkins laughed, turning on her heel and heading back toward the nurses' station. "You'll have to tell him yourself when he comes down to inspect the playroom."

True to form, less than ten minutes later, the heavy glass doors of the pediatric wing hissed open, and Rafe Calder strode down the corridor. He had discarded his suit jacket, his crisp white dress shirt rolled up to the elbows to reveal the strong, corded muscles of his forearms, looking entirely out of place yet completely at home amid the colorful murals of cartoon animals painted along the hallway walls.

He spotted Tessa standing near the nurses' station and altered his course immediately, his long strides eating up the distance in seconds.

"I heard a rumor that you were threatening to revoke my visiting privileges," Rafe said by way of greeting, a low, rich rumble of amusement vibrating in his chest as he stopped a foot away from her.

"Not just visiting privileges," Tessa replied evenly, locking her tablet and sliding it into the deep pocket of her lab coat. "I was considering issuing a restraining order to keep you from turning my hospital into a real estate portfolio."

"I'm merely expanding our philanthropic footprint," Rafe protested smoothly, though his dark eyes danced with private humor. "Besides, that parking garage was a public nuisance. It needed a complete overhaul."

"It had four hundred parking spaces, Rafe," Tessa sighed playfully. "We don't need a four-hundred-car garage for a twenty-bed pediatric wing."

"You never know when an influx of patients might arrive," he countered smoothly, before his expression softened into something deeper and more intense. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her face, tucking it neatly behind her ear. "How's the new ward holding up?"

Tessa leaned imperceptibly into his touch, closing her eyes for a brief second before looking back up into his gaze. "It's perfect. The nurses love the new equipment, the kids have a safe space to play, and for the first time in my career, I don't have to worry about whether a patient's insurance will cover basic emergency supplies."

"Good," Rafe murmured, his thumb lightly tracing the high curve of her cheekbone. "Because you've spent the last three months fighting for everyone else's recovery. Now it's time to focus on yours."

Tessa raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing at the corners of her lips. "And what does my recovery entail, Mr. Calder?"

"An evening away from sterile hospital corridors," Rafe said without a moment of hesitation. "Pack a bag. We're spending the weekend at the lake house upstate. No phones, no board meetings, and no corporate lawyers."

Tessa stared at him for a long moment, the warmth of his hand still lingering against her skin. The relentless pace of the foundation restructuring, the hospital renovations, and the haunting ghosts of her past had kept her spinning in high gear for months. The thought of absolute silence, fresh mountain air, and uninterrupted hours with the man who had pulled her out of the dark felt like an impossible luxury.

"Only if Nora comes with us," Tessa added firmly.

Rafe’s smile widened into a full, genuine grin—a sight that never failed to make her heart skip a beat. "Nora's already packed her red rubber ball and three different stuffed animals. Mrs. Gable confirmed the diaper bag has been loaded into the car since six this morning."

Tessa laughed, shaking her head in fond disbelief. "You really do plan everything, don't you?"

"Only the things that matter," Rafe said quietly, taking her hand in his and lacing his fingers securely through hers. "Only the things that matter."
