Chapter 28 - A Quiet Hour in the Sanctuary

As the sun began its slow descent behind the New Jersey Palisades, painting the sky in deep bruises of purple and incandescent orange, the chaos of the hospital’s first day slowly gave way to the quiet hum of the night shift. Down in the emergency department, the nurses were settling into their routines, monitors beeped softly in the background, and the frantic energy of the grand opening melted into a steady, methodical rhythm of healing.
Up on the private rooftop garden of the trauma center—a secluded sanctuary of green boxwood hedges, smooth river stones, and warm architectural lighting—Tessa stood alone by the glass parapet. The cold spring wind caught the hem of her dress, but she barely felt it. Her mind was still racing from the boardroom confrontation earlier that afternoon.
The victory of opening day was real, but the battle to protect their vision had only just begun. Building an empire from scratch was one thing; defending it from the wolves who wanted to commercialize every heartbeat was an entirely different war.
A soft click echoed behind her as the heavy glass door to the rooftop opened and closed. Heavy footsteps approached on the gravel path, and a familiar warmth enveloped her as Rafe’s overcoat settled gently over her shoulders. He stepped up beside her, leaning his forearms against the glass railing and looking out over the glittering expanse of Manhattan.
"Sterling’s lawyers called my office an hour ago," Rafe said softly, breaking the quiet. "They formally withdrew their objections to the uncompensated care cap. Our operational model is secure for the next five years."
Tessa let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension leaving her shoulders as she leaned her head against his arm. "You terrified him, didn't you?"
"I reminded him of the terms of our partnership," Rafe corrected with a faint, dry smirk. "Sometimes corporate parasites need a clear demonstration of who actually holds the leverage."
Tessa turned to look at him, the amber light of the rooftop lanterns catching the sharp angles of his face. She reached up, her fingers tracing the edge of his collar. "You didn't have to fight that battle for me, Rafe. I had him handled."
"You shouldn't have to fight scavengers while you're trying to save lives," Rafe murmured, turning his head to look down at her. His dark eyes, usually hard and guarded when dealing with the corporate world, softened completely as they rested on her. "You’ve spent your entire life fighting alone, Tessa. That’s why we built this. So you wouldn't have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders anymore."
She smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that chased away the last lingering shadows of the day. She reached up, touching the silver key on her necklace, then reached across to lightly touch the heavy gold signet ring on his finger—the two symbols of their shared survival and enduring bond.
"I know," she whispered. "And I wouldn't want anyone else in the trenches with me."

Rafe reached out, cupping her face in his large, warm hand, his thumb gently brushing her cheekbone. The wind rustled the trees around them, but in that private sanctuary high above the roaring pulse of the city, the rest of the world felt miles away.
"Tomorrow," Rafe said quietly, his voice a low, steady promise, "we take the next step. But tonight... tonight belongs to us."
