Chapter 8 - The Renewal of Lomas de Chapultepec

Spring arrived in Mexico City, bringing with it bright purple jacaranda blossoms that blanketed the streets of Lomas de Chapultepec.
The mansion had undergone a complete transformation. The dark, heavy furniture that Teresa had insisted on keeping during Mariana's marriage was entirely removed. The interior was redesigned with soaring glass walls, bright white marble, warm wooden finishes, and vibrant modern Mexican art.
In the spacious, sunlit kitchen where Teresa had once torn Mariana’s white dress, a massive island of polished white quartz stood under elegant brass lighting.
Mariana stood near the island, pouring fresh orange juice into two glasses.
Mateo walked into the kitchen wearing a relaxed linen shirt, wrapping his arms gently around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"Good morning, beautiful," Mateo murmured, kissing her cheek softly.
"Good morning," Mariana smiled, leaning back against his chest, enjoying the quiet security of his embrace. "Did you sleep well?"
"Best sleep I've had in months," Mateo smiled, looking around the bright, immaculate kitchen. "The house looks incredible, Mariana. It feels... alive."
"It feels like mine again," Mariana said thoughtfully, looking down at the pristine white marble counter. "For years, this room felt like a battlefield. Now it just feels like home."
"It's a sanctuary," Mateo corrected gently, turning her around so she faced him. "And the woman who owns it is unstoppable."

Later that afternoon, Gonzalo dropped off an official legal update. Teresa had relocated to a small, dusty village in Puebla, living in a rented room funded by distant relatives, spending her weekends completing her court-mandated community service by sweeping public park walkways. The high-society friends she used to brag to had completely cut all ties with her, leaving her entirely isolated in her disgrace.
Mariana filed the report away in her desk drawer, closing it for the last time. The past was fully buried.
