Chapter 2 - The Audit of Deceit

The afternoon sun gave way to a dark, overcast sky as rain began to drizzle over the city.
Inside the glass-walled executive suite on the 30th floor of the Ruta Norte Logística skyscraper in Reforma, Mariana stood looking down at the crawling city lights. She wore a tailored ivory suit, her hair gathered in a sleek, immaculate bun. Her face was serene, devoid of any weakness or tear stains.
A knock sounded at the door. Her CFO, Sofia Alarcón, walked in carrying three thick, red-labeled binders.
"Mariana," Sofia said, her voice laced with grave seriousness. "The preliminary audit on Alejandro’s operational department is complete."
Mariana turned around slowly, taking a sip of her black coffee. "How deep does it go, Sofia?"
"Deeper than we thought," Sofia replied, opening the primary binder on the marble coffee table. "Over the past eighteen months, Alejandro authorized forty-two fraudulent invoices to a logistics sub-contractor called 'Transportes Sandoval'—a shell company registered directly under his mother Teresa’s maiden name."
Mariana’s eyes narrowed slightly, a cold spark igniting within them. "He was stealing from my company to fund her lavish lifestyle."
"Exactly $1.8 million pesos," Sofia confirmed, sliding a stack of bank transfers toward Mariana. "Teresa’s boutique in Querétaro wasn't thriving because of her 'business savvy.' It was being kept afloat by wire transfers diverted directly from our regional fuel budget. He signed off on every single one using his VP approval limit."
Mariana let out a quiet, humorless breath. Seven years she had shielded Alejandro from his own insecurities. When they married, he was struggling with debt, blacklisted by major logistics firms for incompetence. She had given him a second chance, a high-ranking title, and an unearned status. And while she was building an empire, he was quietly bleeding her dry to feed his mother's delusion.
"Where are they now?" Mariana asked, her tone flat.
"They're currently at the St. Regis hotel downtown," Sofia said, checking her tablet. "Alejandro tried to check into the executive suite using his corporate Black Card. It was declined at the front desk. The manager had to escort them to the lobby while Teresa threw a massive scene about 'corporate persecution.' They ended up booking a budget room down near the bus terminal using Alejandro’s personal debit card."
"Good," Mariana said smoothly. "Has Gonzalo filed the criminal complaint with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office?"
"The embezzlement charges, tax fraud indictments, and the destruction of personal property video from last night have all been submitted," Sofia stated. "The arrest warrants for Alejandro and Teresa will be issued by tomorrow morning."
Meanwhile, in a cramped, humid hotel room near the Norte bus terminal, the air was thick with screams and sobbing.
Teresa was pacing back and forth across the stained carpet, pulling her hair out in handfuls. "You lied to me, Alejandro! For seven years, you made me look like an idiot! You told me you owned the house! You told me you were the boss!"
"I WAS the boss!" Alejandro screamed back, slamming his fist against the cheap wooden desk. "I was the VP! I ran the daily operations!"
"You were an employee!" Teresa shrieked, tears ruining her heavy makeup. "She treated you like a manager! She let me insult her, she let me tear her clothes, knowing all along that she held the leash! She humiliated us!"
"YOU humiliated us, Mom!" Alejandro roared, his eyes wild with desperation. "I told you to leave her alone! I told you to stop picking fights! But you couldn't keep your mouth shut! You had to tear that damn dress!"
"I tore it because she was arrogant!" Teresa defended fiercely, clutching her throat. "She was acting superior! She’s supposed to be your wife, Alejandro! A wife obeys her husband!"
"She doesn't obey anyone, Mom!" Alejandro collapsed onto the bed, burying his face in his trembling hands. "She owns Ruta Norte. She owns everything. And now... I have nothing."
The landline phone on the nightstand suddenly rang. Alejandro grabbed it frantically, hoping against hope that it was Mariana calling to tell him this was all a terrible nightmare, that she was willing to forgive him if he begged.
"Alejandro Sandoval?" a stern, unfamiliar voice spoke through the speaker.
"Yes! Who is this?"
"This is Detective Morales from the Mexico City Financial Crimes Bureau. We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding corporate embezzlement and tax evasion. Stay where you are."

The line went dead.
Alejandro’s phone slipped from his hand, falling onto the floor. He looked up at his mother, whose face was as pale as a corpse. The nightmare wasn't ending. It was only just beginning.
