Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Boutique

The legal storm hit with unrelenting speed. Within forty-eight hours of the court hearing, federal marshals executed a search and seizure warrant on Teresa’s beloved boutique in Querétaro.

The boutique—which Teresa had used for years as her personal trophy to brag to her upper-class friends—was revealed to be nothing more than a laundering front for the embezzled Ruta Norte funds. Every rack of imported clothing, every crystal chandelier, and every piece of furniture had been purchased using stolen corporate capital.

Mariana sat in her home office in Lomas de Chapultepec, watching a live video feed provided by her legal team.

Workers in yellow vests were systematically packing the contents of the boutique into large cardboard boxes, loading them onto a Ruta Norte shipping truck. The store’s heavy glass doors were locked, slapped with bright orange official government seizure notices.

Gonzalo walked into the office, setting a fresh stack of legal documents on her desk.

"The forfeiture process for the Querétaro property is complete," Gonzalo reported. "Since the original lease and inventory were paid for with embezzled funds, the court has awarded full asset recovery to Ruta Norte Logística. The boutique will be liquidated at auction next week."

"And their personal bank accounts?" Mariana asked, taking a sip of her tea.

"Completely frozen," Gonzalo said. "Alejandro’s personal accounts were drained to cover back taxes and legal retainers. Teresa’s credit cards have been canceled. They have zero liquid assets remaining."

"Where is Teresa being held?"

"She was released on conditional bail pending trial, but because she has no money and no home, she is currently staying in a women's shelter on the outskirts of the city," Gonzalo noted with a faint, sharp smile. "She tried to demand a private room, but the shelter directors promptly reminded her of where she was."

Mariana set her teacup down, looking out over her tranquil, immaculately restored garden.

Two days ago, Teresa had stood in Mariana’s kitchen, holding a blue silk blouse, shouting that Mariana was a "nobody mooching off her son." Now, the very woman who boasted about high society was eating canned soup in a municipal shelter, while the son she idolized sat in a federal holding cell waiting for his sentencing hearing.

"Has Alejandro offered a plea bargain?" Mariana asked.

"His lawyer approached us this morning," Gonzalo said. "Alejandro is willing to plead guilty to all charges and sign a full, uncontested divorce agreement, waiving any claim to spousal support or marital assets, if you agree to drop the secondary personal damage charges against his mother."

Mariana turned her head, a cold, calculated smile playing on her lips. "Tell his lawyer that I don't negotiate with thieves. He will sign the uncontested divorce, he will serve his full prison sentence, and his mother will face the court for her role in the tax fraud."

Gonzalo bowed his head respectfully. "Understood, Madam President. I will deliver the message personally."
