Chapter 3 - The Public Unmasking

By 8:00 AM the following morning, news of the scandal had ripped through the business circles of Mexico City like wildfire.

Ruta Norte Logística released an official press statement announcing the immediate termination and criminal prosecution of former Vice President Alejandro Sandoval for grand embezzlement and corporate fraud. The story was picked up by major financial publications, completely destroying any remaining shreds of Alejandro’s professional reputation.

In the lobby of the Mexico City Financial District Courthouse, dozens of reporters and camera crews gathered as Gonzalo Reyes and Mariana’s legal team arrived to submit further evidence.

Alejandro arrived fifty minutes later, accompanied by a cheap, overworked public defense lawyer. He wore a rumpled gray suit, his hair unwashed, dark circles surrounding his sunken eyes. Behind him shuffled Teresa, hiding her face beneath a large scarf, cowering from the flashing camera lights.

"Mr. Sandoval! Is it true you embezzled nearly two million pesos from your wife's company?" a reporter shouted, pushing a microphone into his face.

"Teresa! Did you know your boutique was funded by stolen money?" another journalist called out.

Teresa snapped, swinging her handbag wildly at the camera lens. "Get away from us! You parasites! My son is an innocent man! That evil woman framed us!"

"Quiet, Mom!" Alejandro hissed, dragging her through the glass security doors into the courthouse lobby.

Inside the grand hallway, standing near the marble pillars, was Mariana.

She looked breathtaking. Wearing a sleek crimson dress with a black coat draped over her shoulders, she stood flanked by Gonzalo and two senior partners from the city's top law firm. She didn't look angry; she looked completely untouched by the chaos surrounding her.

Alejandro stopped dead in his tracks. Seeing her standing there—radiant, powerful, and utterly out of his reach—a sudden, desperate surge of regret washed over him. He broke away from his lawyer and stumbled toward her.

"Mariana!" Alejandro cried out, his voice cracking. "Mariana, please! Look at me!"

Gonzalo immediately stepped forward, blocking Alejandro’s path with an arm of iron. "Step back, Mr. Sandoval. You are violating the active restraining order."

"Mariana, please!" Alejandro begged, looking over Gonzalo's shoulder, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "I'm sorry! I know I messed up! I shouldn't have let my mother talk to you like that! I shouldn't have let her tear your dress! Please, talk to me! We can fix this!"

Mariana slowly turned her head, her deep brown eyes locking onto his. The utter coldness in her gaze made Alejandro’s breath catch in his throat.

"Fix this, Alejandro?" Mariana asked, her voice calm and crystal-clear, echoing off the high marble ceiling. "You didn't mess up. You revealed who you truly were. For seven years, I gave you my trust, my home, and my name. And you repaid me by stealing from my company and letting your mother trample my dignity in my own kitchen."

"It was a mistake!" Alejandro sobbed. "I was stupid! I was insecure!"

"You were greedy," Mariana corrected softly. "And your mother was arrogant. You both thought my silence was weakness. You forgot that I built Ruta Norte from nothing—and I will crush anyone who tries to tear down what I built."

Teresa pushed her way to the front, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Mariana. "You cold-hearted monster! He is your husband! How can you destroy his life over a few pieces of cloth and some minor accounting errors?!"

Mariana looked at Teresa with genuine, quiet pity.

"Teresa," Mariana said smoothly. "Those 'accounting errors' are carrying a ten-year mandatory prison sentence. And as for those 'pieces of cloth'... they cost you your son's future, your home, and your freedom. I hope the pleasure of tearing my white dress was worth it."

Before Teresa could scream another insult, two uniformed federal police officers stepped up behind them.

"Alejandro Sandoval, Teresa Sandoval," the lead officer declared, pulling out two pairs of heavy steel handcuffs. "You are officially under arrest for financial fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent..."

The cold metal cuffs clicked around Alejandro’s wrists first, then Teresa's. Teresa let out a blood-curdling shriek as she was grabbed by the officers, her silk scarf falling to the dirty floor, completely exposed to the flashing cameras of the reporters outside the glass doors.

Alejandro was dragged away, his head bowed in absolute defeat, while Mariana turned her back on them, walking calmly toward the private executive elevators without looking back once.
