Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Santa Fe

Three weeks after the divorce was finalized, Mariana traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico—the very trip she had been preparing for on the night Teresa tore her clothes.

The trip was for the annual Latin American Logistics Summit, where Mariana was awarded the prestigious "CEO of the Year" honor for Ruta Norte’s explosive growth and ethical corporate restructuring.

The gala was held in a historic adobe estate lit by warm lanterns and glowing fireplaces. Mariana wore a magnificent, custom-made white gown—a masterpiece of silk and hand-sewn embroidery—that radiated grace, power, and absolute victory.

Standing beside her near the courtyard fountain was Mateo Silva, the charismatic founder of Silva Global Maritime, a major international shipping firm headquartered in Miami. Mateo was a tall, sharp-eyed man with a warm laugh and a reputation for rock-solid integrity. He had worked with Mariana on several cross-border ventures over the past two years, quietly admiring her intelligence and strength from afar.

"You look stunning tonight, Mariana," Mateo said warmly, handing her a glass of vintage champagne. "And congratulations on the award. No one deserved it more."

"Thank you, Mateo," Mariana smiled, taking a sip. "It feels good to be here. A few weeks ago, I wasn't even sure if I would make this trip."

Mateo looked at her with genuine, quiet respect. "I heard about the drama in Mexico City. The press made a circus out of it, but the way you handled that situation... you proved to the entire industry what kind of leader you are. You don't bow to parasites."

Mariana looked up at the starlit sky, feeling a profound wave of relief wash over her. "I spent seven years trying to make myself smaller so an insecure man could feel bigger. I will never make that mistake again."

"A real man doesn't need you to be smaller, Mariana," Mateo said softly, stepping closer, his eyes locked onto hers with deep sincerity. "A real man wants to build an empire alongside you."

Mariana felt a gentle, long-forgotten warmth bloom in her chest. Standing under the desert stars, surrounded by success and genuine respect, she realized that the chapter of humiliation was officially closed. She was no longer surviving her past; she was commanding her future.
