Chapter 8 - The Renewal of the Estate

Three months passed.
The cold winter winds swept across Chicago, covering the Castellano estate in a blanket of soft white snow. But inside the mansion, the cold, sterile atmosphere that had defined the house for years was completely gone.
Laughter, music, and the joyful sounds of a child echoed through the grand halls every day.
The East Wing courtyard, once known as the dangerous territory of a killer beast, was now filled with wooden playhouses, snowmen, and bright red sleds.
Nora sat in the sunlit morning room, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, reviewing architectural blueprints for the new children's art center she was building downtown—funded entirely by the Vance-Castellano Foundation.
Apollo was lying on the rug beside her feet, wearing a red winter scarf that Clara had insisted he wear.
The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Damon walked into the room, holding two cups of fresh espresso. He looked relaxed, his dark hair falling softly over his forehead, no longer wearing his stiff corporate suits when he was home.
He set a cup down in front of Nora, bending over to press a soft kiss against her lips.
"Good morning, my love," Damon murmured, his hand resting gently on her shoulder.
"Good morning," Nora smiled, leaning into his touch. "How was the board meeting this morning?"
"Boring," Damon chuckled, sitting beside her on the plush sofa. "The directors are still nervous that I retired from active street operations, but when I showed them our quarterly returns from the new international shipping harbor, nobody had any complaints."
"You really retired?" Nora asked softly, looking into his eyes. "No more threats? No more weapons?"
Damon took her hand, weaving his fingers through hers. "I promised you and Clara a safe life, Nora. I spent fifteen years building an empire so no one could touch me. Now that I have you both, I don't need to fight anymore. My empire is right here inside these walls."
Suddenly, the glass doors leading from the garden swung open.
Clara burst into the room, her cheeks rosy from the cold, covered in snow, holding a bright silver box wrapped in a red ribbon.
"Daddy! Mommy! Look what arrived in the mail!" Clara cheered, running over to the sofa.
Damon pulled his daughter onto his lap, brushing snow off her coat. "What is it, sweetheart?"
"The mailman said it's a special delivery from Italy!" Clara squealed, helping her father untie the ribbon.
Damon opened the silver box. Inside lay an exquisite, hand-carved mahogany jewelry box, accompanied by a letter written in elegant gold ink.
Damon unfolded the letter and read it aloud:
'To Don Damon Castellano and Miss Nora Vance. In honor of your upcoming wedding, the Castellano family elders in Sicily formally recognize Clara Castellano as the sole heiress to the Castellano legacy. May your house remain unbroken for generations.'
Nora looked at the sparkling, custom-designed diamond engagement ring resting inside the velvet lining of the box—a ring Damon had ordered from Rome a month ago.
Damon picked up the ring, looking at Nora with intense devotion in his dark eyes.
"Nora Vance," Damon said softly, his deep voice carrying a profound warmth. "Three years ago, you walked out of my life and left your dog behind. Today, I am asking you to stay forever."
May you like
Nora’s eyes brimmed with happy tears. She didn't need to think for even a second.
"Yes, Damon," Nora whispered, leaning in to kiss him passionately as Clara giggled and clapped her hands, and Apollo let out a happy, booming bark that echoed through the warm, sunny house.
