Chapter 7 - The Truth Revealed

The estate returned to its quiet, pristine order by noon.

Inside the grand master study, Nora sat on the velvet sofa, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. Clara was sitting on the carpet nearby, using colored pencils to draw a picture of a giant black dog wearing a gold crown.

The heavy oak doors opened. Damon walked in, carrying a sealed white envelope that had just been delivered by Dr. Aris's private courier.

Nora stood up immediately, setting her tea cup down on the table. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as she looked at the envelope in his hand.

Damon didn't speak. He walked over to his desk, picked up a silver letter opener, and sliced the top of the envelope open.

He pulled out the folded paper inside.

The silence in the room was suffocating. The only sound was the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner and Clara’s crayons scratching against the paper.

Damon read the medical report. His dark, analytical eyes scanned down the page, past the technical jargon, until they reached the bottom line:

PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.99%.

Damon stood entirely motionless for ten long seconds. The man who had managed billions of dollars, outsmarted federal prosecutors, and dismantled crime syndicates without shedding a single tear felt a sudden, powerful surge of emotion crash through his chest.

Clara was his daughter.

He turned around slowly, looking at Clara. The little girl looked up from her drawing, offering him a sweet, toothy grin.

"Mister Damon?" Clara asked, holding up her paper. "Look! I drew Apollo! And I drew you wearing a cape!"

Damon set the paper on the desk. He walked over to the rug, completely ignoring his tailored suit, and sank down onto his knees in front of the little girl.

"It's a beautiful drawing, Clara," Damon said softly, his voice carrying a raw, uncharacteristic tremor.

He reached out, his broad, strong hand gently cupping her tiny cheek, his thumb brushing over her soft skin with a reverence he had never shown to anything in his entire life.

"Clara," Damon whispered, looking into her emerald-green eyes. "Do you know who I am?"

Clara tilted her head, tapping her chin with a red crayon. "Mommy said you were the king of the big house."

Damon looked up at Nora, who was standing a few feet away, tears streaming down her face.

"I'm not a king, Clara," Damon said, looking back at his daughter, a warm, genuine smile filling his face. "I'm your dad."

Clara’s brown eyes went wide with wonder. She looked at Nora, who gave her a tearful, happy nod.

Without a second thought, Clara dropped her crayons, threw her tiny arms around Damon’s neck, and hugged him tightly. "I have a dad! I have a dad!"

Damon wrapped his long arms around her small frame, holding his daughter close to his heart, burying his face in her dark curls. For thirty-six years, Damon had believed that control and power were the only things worth living for. But holding his daughter in his arms, he realized that true power was protecting the people you loved.

Over Clara’s shoulder, Damon extended his hand toward Nora.

Nora stepped forward, placing her hand in his. Damon pulled her down gently, wrapping his arm around her waist, bringing mother and daughter together into an unbreakable embrace.
