Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gate

The morning arrived with a pale silver sunlight filtering through the clouds over Lake Michigan.
Inside the estate's private medical room, a kindly female physician named Dr. Aris picked up a cotton swab, gently dabbing the inside of Clara’s cheek while the little girl happily giggled, watching Apollo chase his own tail on the floor.
"All done, sweetheart!" Dr. Aris smiled, placing the sample into a sterile glass tube and sealing it. "You were so brave."
Nora sat on the edge of the examination table, her hands tightly clasped in her lap, her nerves frayed to the absolute limit.
Damon stood near the doorway, watching the process with his usual calm, unshakeable demeanor. He gestured to Dr. Aris. "Run the expedite sequence. I want the results by midnight."
"Of course, Don Damon," the doctor nodded, packing her medical bag and exiting through the side door with two armed guards accompanying her.
Once the doctor was gone, Nora stood up, stepping between Damon and Clara.
"Why are you doing this?" Nora demanded, her voice laced with panic. "Four years ago, before I vanished, we met once at the charity gala in Geneva! It was one night, Damon! One night before my father forced me into the engagement with Julian!"
Damon walked slowly into the center of the room. He didn't look angry; he looked intensely curious.
"One night," Damon agreed softly, stopping two feet away from her. "A night where you told me you were terrified of what your father was planning for you. A night where you asked me to help you disappear."
Nora lowered her gaze, memories of that rainy night in Switzerland flooding back into her mind. She had been desperate, cornered by her family’s financial debts, and in a moment of reckless passion, she had thrown herself into the arms of the most dangerous man in the room—Damon Castellano.
"I was scared," Nora whispered. "And then I found out I was pregnant. I couldn't tell you, Damon. If Julian found out I was carrying another man's child, he would have killed us both!"
"And so you ran," Damon said, his tone devoid of judgment, but heavy with underlying pain. "You chose to live in poverty, washing dishes in dark kitchens, rather than coming to me for help."
"I didn't know if I could trust you!" Nora cried, tears springing to her eyes. "You are a mafia boss! Everyone said you were cold, unfeeling, a monster who ruined his enemies without blinking!"
Damon looked down at Clara, who had stopped playing and was now watching them with big, innocent eyes.
"They aren't wrong," Damon admitted quietly, turning his gaze back to Nora. "I am cold. I am unfeeling to my enemies. But I protect what is mine."
Before Nora could respond, the emergency intercom on the wall beeped loudly with three sharp blasts.
ALERT: PERIMETER BREACH AT THE SOUTH GATE. MULTIPLE ARMED VEHICLES APPROACHING.
Salvo’s voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and tense. "Boss! It’s Julian Moretti! He’s brought six armored SUVs to the front gate. He’s demanding to speak with you immediately!"
Nora gasped, her face draining of color as she pulled Clara into a tight hug. "He's here..."
Damon didn't flinch. His expression hardened into a terrifying mask of absolute, lethal control. He reached into his shoulder holster, checking the magazine of his custom firearm with a practiced, effortless flick of his wrist.
"Nora," Damon commanded, his voice cold as ice. "Take Clara to the basement vault with Apollo."
"Damon, please don't go out there!" Nora begged, grabbing his sleeve. "Julian brought dozens of men! He’ll kill you!"
Damon reached out, his broad hand gently cupping the back of her head, pulling her face up until her eyes met his.

"This is my estate, Nora," Damon said, his dark eyes burning with an ancient, dangerous fire. "Nobody comes into my house and threatens my family. Stay inside."
He turned on his heel and walked out of the room, Apollo following his command to stay behind with Nora, letting out a deep, protective growl as the heavy steel vault doors began to close.
