Chapter 9 - The Final Salute

Two weeks later, Nora returned to the military installation refreshed, grounded, and stronger than ever. The morning sun glinted off the secure perimeter gates as she stepped out of her car, dressed sharply in her civilian security uniform, her posture straight and commanding.

As she walked toward the main guardhouse, her team of junior guards snapped to attention, offering crisp, synchronized salutes.

Nora returned the salute with a steady, confident hand.

Later that afternoon, during a small, private ceremony in the base commander's office, General Hayes pinned the Civilian Valor Award onto her lapel, commending her steadfast dedication both on and off duty. Julian attended the ceremony at the personal invitation of the General, standing quietly in the back row, clapping with genuine admiration.

When the ceremony concluded, Julian waited until the room cleared out before approaching Nora near the office exit.

"Congratulations, Sergeant. Well deserved," Julian said, offering a warm, respectful smile.

"Thank you, Julian," Nora replied, shaking his hand firmly. "How are things with the annulment?"

"Finalized yesterday," Julian said, a weight clearly lifted from his shoulders. "My lawyers made sure it was ironclad. I'm transferring to our London office next month. A clean break, a fresh start."

"I'm glad," Nora said sincerely. "You deserve a life built on truth, not performance."

"We both do," Julian agreed, holding her gaze for a long moment before offering a polite nod. "Take care of yourself, Nora."

"You too, Julian. Safe travels."
