Chapter 2 - The Morning After the Collapse

The sunrise over the city was muted by a heavy layer of gray clouds, matching the grim reality unfolding inside the Vance family household. Nora sat at her small kitchen table in her modest apartment, nursing a mug of black coffee while reviewing her bank statements on a tablet.

True to her word, the hotel’s financial department had processed the cancellation of the master ledger’s remaining charges on Nora's account at midnight. The primary liability now rested squarely on Alyssa and their mother, Helen.

Her phone buzzed violently against the wooden table. It was Helen. Then it buzzed again. Text messages poured in rapid succession.

Helen: Nora Marie Vance, you pick up this phone right now! The hotel is demanding thirty-thousand dollars in immediate incidentals or they're seizing our luggage!

Helen: Your sister is beside herself! Julian won't answer his phone! You need to call the manager and fix this immediately!

Helen: How could you be so spiteful? Family takes care of family!

Nora didn't even open the messages. She pressed a single button, blocking her mother's number permanently. For good measure, she blocked Alyssa as well.

A sharp knock at her front door broke the silence of the apartment. Nora frowned, checking her watch. It was barely seven in the morning. She walked down the hallway, unlatched the security chain, and pulled the door open.

Julian stood on the landing. He was still wearing his tuxedo jacket from the night before, though his bowtie was gone and his shirt collar was unbuttoned. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes telling the story of a man who hadn't slept a wink.

"May I come in, Nora?" he asked quietly, his voice lacking its usual military cadence, sounding instead raw and vulnerable.

Nora stared at him for a moment, then stepped aside, gesturing him into the small living room. She motioned toward the sofa, taking a seat opposite him in a worn armchair.

"I'm sorry," Julian began immediately, running a hand over his face. "I am so damn sorry for what you endured at that reception. I knew Alyssa was superficial, but last night... last night showed me a level of cruelty I didn't know existed. My parents are appalled. My father—who served twenty-eight years in the Navy—wanted to turn the car around and march back into that ballroom just to salute you properly."

"You didn't have to make a scene, Julian," Nora said softly. "You walked away from your own wedding."

"It wasn't a wedding, Nora. It was a fraud," Julian replied, looking up to meet her eyes with fierce intensity. "She lied about who paid for it. She lied about her family's values. And worse, she mocked a wounded veteran in front of my commanding officers. My career in the defense sector requires integrity. Marrying someone like that would have destroyed everything I stand for."

"And where is Alyssa now?"

"Locked in her mother's guest room, refusing to come out," Julian sighed, leaning back against the couch. "Her friends have already started unsharing the wedding photos on social media. The high-society bubble she spent five years curating just popped in twelve hours."

Julian reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound checkbook. He laid it flat on the coffee table and pushed it across toward Nora.

"What is this?" Nora asked, narrowing her eyes.

"It's a cashier's check for the full amount of the venue and catering deposit you put down," Julian said evenly. "My lawyers are drafting the annulment papers as we speak, but I refuse to let you bear the financial burden of my ex-fiancee's greed. Please, Nora. Let me do at least this much."
