Chapter 7 - A New Horizon

The warm sand of the Gulf Coast felt incredible beneath Nora’s bare feet. The salty ocean breeze ruffled her hair as she walked along the shoreline, the rhythmic crashing of the waves washing away the lingering static of her old life.
She wore a simple linen shirt and shorts, her military ID safely locked in a hotel room safe, her mind completely clear of shift schedules, security clearances, and family drama.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, expecting another automated notification or perhaps a blocked-number attempt from her mother. Instead, it was an incoming text message from an unknown number with a local area code.
Unknown: Hey Sergeant Vance. This is Colonel Hayes from the base installation. I heard about what went down this weekend. Just wanted to let you know that your position as head of security is secure, and the general wants to formally nominate you for the installation's Civilian Valor Award for your community leadership off-duty. Enjoy your vacation.
Nora stared at the screen, a genuine, radiant smile spreading across her face.
She had spent her whole life believing that love meant enduring mistreatment, that loyalty meant bleeding dry for people who only loved what you could carry. But standing there on the sun-drenched beach, looking out at the endless horizon, she finally understood the truth.
She wasn't just the reliable one. She wasn't just a gate guard.

She was a survivor, a protector, and a woman who had finally learned how to lock the gate against anyone who didn't respect her worth.
Nora slipped the phone back into her pocket, kicked off her sandals, and walked straight into the warm, inviting ocean.
