Chapter 1 - The Cold River Breeze

The heavy brass doors of the grand hotel swung shut behind Nora, cutting off the suffocating swell of gasps, stifled sobs, and humiliating whispers that had filled the ballroom just moments before. The cool night air of the riverfront hit her face, carrying the sharp scent of damp concrete and autumn leaves. It was clean. It was real.
For the first time in her thirty-two years, Nora did not feel the crushing weight of obligation pressing down on her shoulders. She walked down the wide marble steps of the hotel entrance, her navy security uniform feeling less like a badge of invisibility and more like a suit of armor she had earned with her own blood and sweat.
Behind her, the glittering glass facade of the ballroom glowed brightly against the night sky, but inside, the illusion had completely collapsed. Julian had dismantled her sister’s carefully constructed world with the precision of a trained soldier. He had laid bare the ugly truth of a family that fed on sacrifice while spitting on the hands that sustained them.
Nora reached her modest sedan parked at the edge of the lot, unlocking the door just as the sharp sound of running heels echoed across the pavement.
"Nora! Wait! Please, Nora, stop!"
Alyssa came stumbling down the steps, her magnificent, six-thousand-dollar wedding gown hitched up around her ankles, a tragic mess of white tulle, smeared mascara, and tear-streaked foundation. She looked pathetic, a fallen queen stripped of her court, desperately chasing the sister she had mocked less than ten minutes prior.
Nora paused with her hand on the car door frame, turning slowly to face her younger sister. She didn't speak. She didn't cross her arms or scowl. She simply waited, her expression entirely neutral.
"How could you do this?" Alyssa gasped, catching her breath, her eyes flashing with a desperate, furious disbelief. "You humiliated me! In front of Julian's entire family! In front of my friends! You ruined my life!"
Nora let out a quiet, humorless breath. "I didn't say a word, Alyssa. Julian spoke. If you wanted a fairytale wedding, maybe you shouldn't have spent your toast mocking the person who signed the check for the venue."
"You manipulated him!" Alyssa shrieked, taking a wild step forward. "You played the victim so he would look at you like some kind of war hero! You've always done this—stealing the spotlight, making everything about your stupid military service!"

"My service kept me alive while you sat at home waiting for Mom to buy you another designer handbag," Nora said, her voice dropping into a register so cold and steady that Alyssa actually flinched. "The bill for this ballroom is in my name. The catering, the bar, the string quartet. I am revoking the authorization on the deposit. By morning, this hotel will be sending the cancellation and the remaining balance directly to you and Mom. Good luck explaining that to your high-society friends."
Before Alyssa could scream another accusation, Nora slid into the driver's seat, pulled the door shut with a heavy thud, and started the engine. As she drove out of the parking lot, she looked in her rearview mirror and saw Alyssa sinking slowly onto the cold concrete, weeping hysterically into her wedding veil.
